The last of summers

Thinking back.

The last of summers.
The last of wading streams
    and carving arrows
The last of lying in a field, swimming
    through blue skies
The last of staying up till three, like
    the end of the world
The last of reading comics and eating
pizza on your belly in the living room
The last of real dreams, and hopes, and
    imagination
The last of all’s forgiven
The last of floating, unopposed

Rich in images and that special evocation of time passing. This is a superbly realised piece which captures that time in a child's life which feels safe, secure and unending. And the title, alas, reveals the truth, but in a beautiful and touching way.
A great read.

God, if only we could go back. Sometimes it's almost recaptured - only for one of the kids to shout, 'Dad.'

Lovely.
