My Dad's not this guy anymore; hasn't been for a long time.  But there was a time my life was ruled by these considerations.  I guess you never really leave that behind.

Dad came home today
This afternoon
Content with the day's work, and
    not reeking of boozy sweat
Dad came home today
Early, now, on time:
    Not tonight,
        after a pensive supper
        eaten in silence
        between mother and son
Not out of the darkness adults call 'morning'
        wanting to talk, argue, shout
        after the house was silent,
        the lights out

I must have lived right today
    Been kind and humble
Observed the rituals, avoided the cracks
    Took the right route home
    Whispered the effective prayer with
        true conviction
My karma aligned; this the reward
        of a loving son;
    a kindness
        to a small animal
in a cage a city wide
                and a bedroom deep.

Thank you, God; my
Dad came home today

you know that one of the things I like about writing is how someone ( me in this case) can but a different interpretation on a piecefrom what the writer maybe intended, the last stanza and the ending cried out to me "my dad as returned from the war.

a good write.

Odd how parents mellow with age - I'm assuming that's what you mean in the intro. My father is a very different man to the one he was when I was growing up. I wonder if I would be different if he'd been mellow all his life.

I'm not saying I'm not mellow - I think I am - just how I mighrt have been different.

This captured those emotions well.

Phil.

Thanks, Bernie... Dad was never in a war, but he was in the Navy at the time. He wasn't an alcoholic but he also wasn't grown up enough yet to tell the boys to piss off when they'd lean on him to go for a few beers after work. Took an ultimatum from my mother to grow him out of it and he's a better person for it.
