My Dad's not this guy anymore; hasn't been for a long time. But there was a time my life was ruled by these considerations. I guess you never really leave that behind. Dad came home today This afternoon Content with the day's work, and not reeking of boozy sweat Dad came home today Early, now, on time: Not tonight, after a pensive supper eaten in silence between mother and son Not out of the darkness adults call 'morning' wanting to talk, argue, shout after the house was silent, the lights out I must have lived right today Been kind and humble Observed the rituals, avoided the cracks Took the right route home Whispered the effective prayer with true conviction My karma aligned; this the reward of a loving son; a kindness to a small animal in a cage a city wide and a bedroom deep. Thank you, God; my Dad came home today
