I'm not that sure they can cook better than most.

The first has cockney charm.
The second swears and bullies proficiently.
The third sucks her fingers in a seductive manner.
Not heard of the last.

I guess they all have that something that makes them good (not for me) television. An ability to cook? Yes. Super cooks? Open to debate.

Interesting verse.

Phil.

Thanks Phil.
Those are the four I have heard of/seen on TV. Yet for a nation with a reputation of bad cuisine, that's a lot of TV chefs. I can't for instance name a single French TV chef and only one Dutch one (and Jamie and Gordon are far more popular over here).
But you see, dear Batty!

We ONLY have CELEBRITY chefs, they are celebrities BECAUSE they exist in a culinary wasteland.

Also, they are usually taught by foreigners and cook (almost exclusively) European cuisine.

To have TV chefs in France, would be like having TV chip-shops here, pointless...

Oli :grin

No, it's true, the British can't cook; that's why there was a British Empire in the first place... we all had to go out and find something to eat! My father's family left Scotland in 1820 but still, if it isn't fried or boiled (or both) and sitting next to potatoes, it isn't "food".

Law, literature, cuisine... two outta three ain't bad. :)

Thanks Oli and Andybayers.
Both sound like good explanations :grin

The British must be modest when it comes to "cooking". Good British cooking is the best in the world - well, it certainly used to be. And why have they dropped "cookery" from the school curriculum? It must be the most useful subject of all. I have Italian friends (many of them) - and I can tell you that they just LOVE English cooking. There are many homes in Italy now who are making steak pies and Yorkshire puddings - but what goes down best of all are our puddings: bread and butter pudding; crumbles, fruit pies, , steamed puddings - and highest on the list is scones. I've had to teach so many Italians how we make these things. British cooking? The best in the world!

Hi Josie.
It's the stereotype of course, which says English can't cook, make coffee, etc (Scots just eat weird things and of Welsh most people hardly even think).
Indeed that's the other irony. While people on the continent joke about your cuisine, English afternoon tea, with typically English snacks, gets more and more popular everywhere.
