Conquistador
By Fledermaus

It seems the conquest of Mexico is almost like a scifi story. Two completely different worlds, both advanced and more or less civilized, with completely different values and military strategies. Both sides must have seen the others as alliens and I suspect they were totally repulsed by the other's behaviour...

Conquistador
They braved the ocean
The men travelled far
In their search for gold
Saw how they oppressed
Slew their prisoners
Bloody sacrifices
To the heathen gods

Aztec
They saw strangers come
Into their own realm
The mightiest place
Great Mexico burned
Their culture destroyed
The snake had returned
Feathered Quetzalcoatl

Your right about it being almost like it being scifi, an interesting, good read.

Odd how with very little change, the opposing groups in this could represent any throughout history.

Conflict appears to be one of the few constants.

Thanks maipenrai and Phil
The strange thing is that although they both commited autrocities, and the battle for Tenochtitlan was probably one of the cruelest cases of urban warfare up till that time, I can't realy say that either of the two sides was wrong.
Cortes came to conquer lands for his king, encountered a people that terrorized its neighbours and sacrificed humans and I believe he sincerely thought he was doing the right thing by destroying their empire.
The Aztecs initially welcomed Cortes, but he repaid their hospitality with violence. And to their standards the Spanish were very un-chivalrous in their way of making war.
The fascinating thing is that both empires were complete aliens to eachother. It's the closest thing to what an extraterrastial invasion would look like.
