Work in progress. It’s not just higher education; it’s a new beginning.
It’s the finally escaping from that single bed in your parents’ pokey bungalow, to a space that’s your own to have for yourself, away from the domestic trivialities of them and their angst.
The independence, self-sufficiency, that you’ve always longed for, even the doing your own washing, is more appealing than being the reason why your mother always has that tired look on her face.
It’s the new relationships. The friendships that will last a lifetime, with people you’ll eventually move in with, fall in love with, perhaps even marry. People that will affect you more than anyone you’ve ever met. People that will change your outlook on life.
And let’s not forget the new experiences. No beating around the bush here, we all know it’s about the sex, drugs, and rock ‘n’ roll. From the drunken fumble with a stranger in another stranger’s bathroom, to countless amounts of vodka poured down your throat, to having your first taste of hallucinogenic drugs and seeing God and the Devil playing cards.
It’s exactly what you’ve been waiting for, what you’ve wanted all along. The final escape from this stiflingly small town and it’s suffocating atmosphere which has restricted you for all these years.
And it’s the moving seven hours away from the girl you’re in love with.
Who wants to be “just friends” before you get too attached.
Who you sat crying over on your front step at three in the morning until the sun rose. Because you know you’d probably give it all up for her.|

Quite an adventure. Good luck. The ending is touching. | Written by Asferthecat (789 comments posted) 10th August 2007 | | Poignant. Love can be heartbreaking when you are young. I'm a bit worried about the attitude to further education though. Er - what about the joy of studying? |
