I wrote this after I had visited my nan in hospital. Although after a while she was well enough to return home I couldn't stop thinking about some of the other patients who never had any family or friends to visit them. My heart really went out to them, It makes me sad to know that some of them actually DO have family yet they never visit. Most Grandparents like to talk about their families to other patients and nurses so I think it would be a small gift to give back when they are ill if they could receive at least one visit. It really does make their day to know they are not forgotten and are cared about. All kids love nans and grandads and if they are lucky to still have them more time should be made to go and see them.  I really do hope I havn't angered or annoyed anyone by voicing my opinion, it just upsets me when my own nan is ill and I know that one day she will not be here. Anyway this short poem is written from my heart.

She sits on the chair by the hospital bed
with a blanket draped over her knees
She stares at the book she has already read
and thinks back to the man of her dreams
How she wished he was here to take all of her fears
and tell her that things will get better
But not a visitor in sight from morning till night
not a card and not even a letter.

Sick and alone wishing she could go home
even though there is no body there
In her own comfy bed and the thoughts in her head
how she longed to have someone to care
But all family has passed and left her till last
How she wishes that she had gone first
Life can be unkind as the elderly find
when the only friend left is the nurse.

Heartfelt, genuine and emotional.

Only one rider - families are strange things. You know what they say about choosing friends & not family.

needs to be published in every community. It is shameful the way we treat some of our old folks. I've just read about Norman Wisdom, who has been put in an old folks home and family have stipulated that friends are not allowed to see him. Family who have not visited him in years. But, of course, he has a fortune!!

How lucky your Nan is to have you to write this.

But as Oli says, not all families can get on!
