Surrey Boy Fails A-Level
By Talisker
16 August 2007

The Education Department claimed today that, by their prompt action in sealing off a terraced house in Leatherhead, they have managed to contain an outbreak of the ALFS (A-level Fail Syndrome).

The claim follows yesterday’s humane slaughter of  17 year old Terence Green, who managed to fail his English A-level – the first A-level failure in any subject in Britain for 12 years.

WS Gilbert and Kurt Vonnegut both based stories on the idea that "when everybody's somebody, then nobody's anybody ....."

You may post this on the "Not News" site, but following present government policy it really belongs in the "Non-Fiction" section ....

Of course the other option would be to let him live, give him a mobile phone and a lock-up so he can become a captain of industry, especailly if he is the only one. they're the only ones who don't have them, now
Like the acronym, nice touch

Wow, a pretty new and radical way to ensure school achievements, got my results and am afraid i may have been humanely slaughtered (bit of an oxymoron there).

I think the 'dumbing down' of society began a long time ago ... way, way back in the seventies. It's how our servants - the Government - manage to keep us in our place. No more civil unrest for them to worry about, you see. Now we write 'leters ov disscussed' (sic) to our beloved tabloids and kill each other in the street. Saves all that bother of educating us ... since, then, we'd only become smart enough to realise how we are being treated. First the smoking ban ... whatever next? (I'm sure someone will enlighten us through satirical prose.)
A fine shot, Talisker. Raised a wry smile.
Cheers!

Good idea, funny piece, enjoyed it.

On the other hand, I know standards have risen noticeably in my sector of education - primary. Whether that is replicated in secondary, I wouldn't know - but doubt. I wonder if we have any 18 year old members to comment.
