Enniskillen
By andybyers
27 August 2007
Proud and emerald-fired
Formed of souls shamrock-hued
    and fed on words, words
She smiled at him

Him, from beyond, away,
One of
    them
Took his hand
    Let out those
    words,
        words
New ones poured in like tea,
    hot, delicious
        needed

What mattered
the colour of souls;
alabaster all in the sight of God
And when the Somme offered his up
She took their daughters
    wild geese
        across the sea

Coming from that part of the world the title intrigued me Andy and I was not disappointed.
There's poignancy and strength reflected in the characters here. Emigration from this Isle has been ongoing for many generations and you have captured some of the sadness in the flight; leaving harsh memories, lost love, opportunity.
A strong and capable lady lives within these lines.
A love poem that resonates long after its first reading. Very well done.

Thanks, HM. :) It's actually inspired by the life events of my great-grandmother.
Memories of a different kind

:) for me, too. We chanced upon Enniskillen during a holiday by horse-drawn caravan some years ago. It was such a peaceful place we didn't want to leave, and spent 4 days there instead of just the one.Granted, we arrived just as a 'long weekend' music festival was about to kick off and during those days it snowed food and rained drink - enough to sate the appetites of any number of starving Hobbits ........ :grin :eek
