When Did You Lose Your Eyebrows?
By jean.day
30 August 2007
This is a tanka, I hope. I wanted to write something on this subject, but didn't feel like it was worth a whole poem or short story.

We have just returned from a holiday in Norfolk - and Philip seems almost well again. His cancer is no longer in evidence on the CT scan - but he has to continue with chemo for a few more months (although at a reduced dose) , and then radiation.

While we were away I realised that Philip's bushy eyebrows had disappeared, and I felt bad about it  - both about them going and about not noticiing it when it happened. He had (and hopefully will again have) thick and curly and untamed eyebrows that met in the middle and made quite a statement on his face. His brothers are similarly blessed but their wives insist on trimming them.

When did you lose your eyebrows?

Wild and bushy things.

They didn't go with your hair.

Now your eyes are nude.

Didn't hear you mourn.

Hi Jean.
Liked your tanka, very descriptive. I liked 'Now your eyes are nude' line.

Glad to hear that Phil is feeling better and that the cancer is no longer evident, hope it continues thus.

A Tanka

I'll show my ignorance by saying that I didn't know what a tanka was before. You've led me to read about them, and it seems there are American Tankas and English Tankas (which are slightly different) - and yet the idea, naturally came from Japan, home to the haiku. You did really well Jean and wrote on a well chosen subject. Well placed on the face, they are the things which hit you in the eye when you look at people. I wish Philip well with his recovery, and my prayers are withyou both.

I liked this Jean. It's simplicity belies the thought and emotion behind it.

Phil.

And thanks for you kind thoughts regarding Philip's recovery. He has just had his 7th (of 8) chemo session and feels very wobbly today. I keep checking his eyebrows each day now, and a tiny bit of hair has started growing back.
