Goodbye To all That
By Talisker

OK!  It is dark!

Inspired by re-reading Robert Grave's brilliant autobiography of the same title.  Borrowing some images and wishing to wave the not worthy flag.

I cleared the house of mirrors

Saw too many ghosts peering

Over my shoulder, sickly smiling

As if in knowledge of my fate

Absently, I gazed this morning

At first light upon the dewy lawn

The yellow dog, portent of death

Tripped unconcerned from tree to tree

I wrote my mother of my death

“He died a coward, a wasted life

Not worth the horrid pain of birth

Devoid of duty, love and all”

And so I lie myself to earth

To sleep forever as before

Welcome sweet oblivion

And goodbye to all that

I liked this. I'm not a poetic kind of guy, or well, I don't read alot of poetry. But I liked the language, I felt a faint flow, I liked it still.

But then again, what do I know about poerty? :P
I know how it is to be inspired though :)

I espcially liked this: " Absently, I gazed this morning

At first light upon the dewy lawn

The yellow dog, portent of death

Tripped unconcerned from tree to tree " , maybe you meant it in some symbolic way, but I just thought the dog was a brilliant Idea.

/Kind regards, William

There's something about this that I like very much. It's a long time since I've read any Robert Graves - so I can't comment on that aspect - but I think it's the general tone and pulse that make this so effective for me.

So, showing my ignorance, I saw this in ‘work awaiting review’ and was drawn to the title as a track from Marillion’s Brave album. Silly me!
Love stanzas 1 & 3 which, although a splendid part of the poem as a whole, for me work extremely well when extracted and combined to form a two stanza poem. But then what do I know about poetry?

All the best,
Steve.
