Nowadays

These are the best of times, these are the worst of times.

Nowadays.

Grocer's shops feed shareholders.

Nowadays.

My lungs are not my own.

Nowadays.

Filthy rich and filthy poor.

Nowadays.

What I am is DNA.

Nowadays.

Television owns my child.

Nowadays.

Everyone has a degree.

Nowadays.

There is only middle ground.

Nowadays.

Specious pop is sold as art.

Nowadays.

Edit what you say and do.

Nowadays.

Do not think what you should not.

Nowadays.

Voyeurism is entertainment.

Nowadays.

Foreign slaves make all our things.

Nowadays.

Alienation is me.

As you say the best of times and the worst of times, but more imortantly it is the only time.
Now the next generation will look back at this time as a golden age and bemoan their time, twas ever thus.

I don't look back at the Thatcher years with dewy eyes.

We still think of the the Victorian era as stern and oppressive.

I take your point about making the best of it. But it is making the best of shitty times, and I won't stop beating the drum about that. Screaming about it is my only antidote - it's one step (for me) above meek acceptance.

Jane, what are you doing wandering around the poetry ward at this time in a flameproof nightie with a box of matches? Was the sudoku in the Nottingham Advertiser too easy today?

Thanks,David the voice of sanity as always. Actually it's not my fault the bloody sat-nav took me to the poetry forum despite the fact I programmed in Comedy. I think Patterjack has been buggering around with it, now all roads lead to poetry and you just can't get egyptian cotton to catch light like proper nylon.

Do you want the good or the bad news first? The good news is that what you say is absolutely true and needed to be said. The bad news is that I thought you used "nowadays" too many times. My opinion is that I feel quite alienated too. Nowadays people come to our beautiful riverside, have a barbecue and leave food and rubbish everywhere and rats are taking over. Nowadays it is always somebody else's concern and never theirs.

Not sure what to make of this one. While I want to agree with the sentiment, my natural instinct is to do my own thing regardless of what the media or anyone else seems to think 'nowadays' demands. I suppose this piece is just another way of beating your own drum while you still can - and I'm all for that. There may come a time when personal drums are banned and we can only tap out the beat of insipid, approved mantras. I wonder whether the next generation will look back and view this as a golden age. I hope not. I hope they have a little more spine than we have and balance community/individual responsibility with acceptance. Hate and fear seem to be driving politics and the media at the moment. I'm waffling.....
