Dreaming of Monsters - a poem for National Poetry Day - 4 October 2007
By Josie
07 September 2007

The subject of National Poetry Day (4 October)  is "Dreams" - so children might like this poem for their class, or Dreamland: http://www.whiteheadm.co.uk/html/dreamland1.html#dreamland

Or  Send me a Dream: http://www.whiteheadm.co.uk/html/send_me.html#adream  - both of which are also on Great Writing.

Have you ever been to Monster Land?

It’s a million miles from here.
You’ll find a beach with lots of sand –

And some creatures, very queer.

They come in many different shapes

          And some various sizes too.
                 Perhaps  you really should escape
Or  they'll  put you in their zoo.

           Ugly monsters everywhere –

            Hideous
 ones in  trees.
Look out, look out, beware, beware –
                 There’s monsters running free.

            Monsters swimming in the sea

Look!  They're also in the sky.
The monster mums sit drinking tea
               While the baby monsters cry.

See - monster daddies – what a size!

          Grans and granddads too.
Uncles and aunts with fearsome eyes –
Some red, some green or blue.

Don’t let these creatures catch you.

Please go quietly as you tread.
You might end up in monster stew –
Or, more probably,  wake in  bed.

Monsters Hmmm?

Gotta say, Josie
the font size is perfect for kids, the poem rhymes very well, and I'm suddenly reminded of Dr. Seuss from when I was five. Nice work! I think kids from say 2-8 or 9 would like this.

I'll take the bottle of brandy! I just copied the font from my poem on microsoft. It is nice for children isn't it? Matches the little monster. You always remember the poems that you liked when you were a child. I hope children remember mine! Thanks

This is the sort of poem I loved when I was a kid! Actually, I enjoyed reading it now, and I'm eighteen!
I can't fault it!

Hi Ian. Thanks for your review, and it is all the more appreciated as you are nearer to childhood than I am. I have written these poems for children and we don't get children's reviews - so yours is the next best thing. I read the poems to children and they tell me they like them (well love them actually) - and especially the funny ones. I have tried to grade my poems so that they appeal to teenagers and adults, but it is nice to know that an 18 year old likes my Monster poem. Thank you again.
I'm fifty one . . .

. . . and it still brought tears to my eyes!

Good poetry writing, like music, is timeless . . .

More please!
