Toad Summer

Children brought the first

Proudly to my door

Incongruous in Tupperware

Stark and beautiful against

The semi-opaque plastic

Why do we call these “warts”?

As if imperfections on the skin

Symmetrical in curves of browns,

Greens and all the in betweens

More beautiful than princely garb

The second sat, big as a fist

On the flagstone patio

Seemingly unconcerned

As if he knew I was no threat

No predatory bird or beast

The dogs found the third

Frantic to get at the creeping thing

Behind the green-glazed planter;

I airlifted him to safety

In the log-pile by the pond

Somehow you've managed to capture the images of toads beautifully, I especially like the line 'big as a fist'.

The only part that doesn't seem to sit quite right is the term 'crawling beastie', it seems too slangish to fit into the rest of the poem. It stands out too much.

But I think this is great and the imagery is spot on.
Thanks Keller

I think you are right - I think I shall change it to "creeping beast".

Incidentally, toads creep and crawl, frogs hop on land - a distinction.

I'm delighted that you thought it was OK.

Cheers

Liked this too Oli. Keller's comment about capturing the image of toads beautifully is spot on.

I think I like crawling beastie. So many audiences and only one poem!

We have many toads in our garden - one of the few things the cat won't kill. Perhaps they don't taste good.
