Well, this is my first post! It is roughly inspired by William Blake, along with a few of my own ideas concerning God. The reference to the Twin Towers at the end, by the way, is my way of showing the power of raw belief, and the poem is in no other way connected with the 9/11 attack.
It is a little rough around the edges, so I would appeciate creative (or indeed destructive) criticism. Cheers!
Pain and joy, anger and mirth;
All the human mind gives birth,
Sadness, hope, love and spite;
From the human soul take flight.
These emotions which control our kind,
Only exist within our mind,
Yet no less real are they to we,
And on our actions their reign is free.
Belief too dwells in that domain,
Belief that grips the mortal brain,
In gods and beings above mankind,
That take hold of the human mind.
And thus these deities reside,
Where pain and joy and hope collide;
And no more substance do they possess,
Yet it makes not their reality less.
For gods that dwell amongst belief,
Can cause happiness and grief,
As a beacon of hope, a light to all;
Yet people die, two towers fall.

Mind is Matter. Written by Josie (2847 comments posted) 13th September 2007 |
| Welcome to GW and congratulations on posting your first poem. It takes courage! I think you have done an excellent poem for your first one. I'm not sure that I agree that our emotions take flight FROM the human soul. I think they dwell there. It's many of our emotions that cause physical illnesses, so we are told, and last week it was telling doctors that we are not getting enough attention paid to them. This is very true. Also, people can understand cancer, but depression is something you can't understand unless you've had it. Yes, one or two lines need a bit of work on them. Well done! |

I like the view you express here in this poem. That it dwells in the mind, even our creations - whether real or not, still reside within and dwell within and become real, because our reality is what we make of it. I feel inspired by your poem! I too share many views on the subject and enjoy writing about it! "For gods that dwell amongst belief, Can cause happiness and grief," Great lines! And a fantastic closure to the poem! Well done! |
