Fool Britannia

This poem is rather cynical, I'm afraid, except at the end. It is very simply about my pride in Britain, except I'm not exactly sure why. It seems to me that Britain is becoming a worse place to live, and it a bit of an international joke. One verse is also about how people in britain refuse to be British; they're either English or Scottish or Welsh or Irish. To me this is a big problem, and I've never quite been able to understand why people do that. Anyway, here it is!

Rule Britannia!
Britannia rules the waves!
Those were the days...

Those patriotic days
When flags were raised,
A chorus of voices
Betraying their pride;
The pride is forgotten,
The flags are all rotten,
Naught is left
Just disappointment resides.

We were alone,
The world was our own,
An empire on which
The sun never set;
Now one amongst all,
We are oh so small,
A relic with memories
We’ll never forget.

Yet here we still stand,
A beautiful land,
Caught up in squabbles
That will never cease;
Once proud to be one,
But those days are gone,
Will Britain manage
To stay in one piece?

“We rule the waves!
We’ll never be slaves!”
Yet now we follow
America’s way;
Troops to Iraq!
To only come back,
Once we’ve permission,
Until then we stay.

Upon cautious feet,
I must walk the street,
Fearing the felons
Who yet walk free;
Sinning with pride,
They do not hide,
They know there’s no fear
For the constabulary.

Despite all these things,
That our nation of kings,
Is broken and beaten
And rotting inside;
Love I still hold,
For Britannia the bold,
Not proud of our nation
But proud of our pride.

I quite agree, and well said! Sorry, I thought your poem was called "Food Britannia" in celebration of British cooking. Seeing that it was not, I wrote my own. One small point: It's not all bad. Ninety nine percent of people here are wonderful, and my Italian friends also went home to tell their families that English people are so wonderful. They work together on projects in their towns, take pride in their gardens, are outward looking (not just family orientated) - and, according to them, more friendly than most Italians. (Not my words for I think the Italians are, on the whole, friendly). "Not proud of our nation?" - I think I've heard that before. Come on Brits, defend yourselves!
Great poem!

Interesting piece. Odd you should celebrate the empire when Britain raped its colonies of raw materials etc. Perhaps we were more united then - but was it greed that tied the nation states of the union together?

Thats a good point. However, I'm not celebrating Britain's abuse of its colonies, although it was probably the empire that did tie the UK together. The poem is supposed to be an expression of lost pride. Remember that although Britain abused its power, it did contribute much to world culture in a positive way. It should also be noted that towards the fall of the empire, colonies were being given much more independence.

I supose you're right, Britain is only a shadow of what it once was, yet aren't all European nations? Spain, Portugal, the Netherlands, Sweden, Turkey, France, Austria, Belgium, Italy, Germany, Russia. None of them still have their empires. I guess Western civilization as a whole (maybe except for the USA) is in decline.
