Leadership in history (Part 2)

Evening

Companion piece to, err, part 1.

Sinnerman

“It’s a novel idea, it’s fresh and it’s bold”
Said the excited young man to the Board
“It will revolutionise how we do business
Our competition will be put to the sword”
“Wake up everyone!” said the chairman;
“Let’s hear what this guy’s got to say
Clear away all the corpses of people,
who presented ideas earlier today”

“Gentlemen, I believe this is the future
It will save billions of people from pain
We could feed the Third World and stop hunger
This idea is to everyone’s gain.
We could avoid all those lay-offs and closures
We’ll be beyond number one in our field
It will guarantee mankind’s survival
It will increase our share price and yield”

At this last point, the Board sat up and listened
The man took out his blueprints and chart
“Stop!” yelled the chairman in anger;
“Lets get one thing straight from the start -
We’re not interested in blue skies dreaming
We’re not interested in the new or the strange
And we definitely don't want proposals
That would involve us actually having to change”

The board all turned to the young man
Now standing in a pool of cold sweat
The man looked, bemused, at the chairman;
“But you haven’t heard what it is yet”
The chair, nodding wisely said; “Trust me”
“Regard our culture as a sacred cow
Just come back with an innovative idea
Which involves us doing what we do now”

Good poem, and it sounds like the attitude of the average politician indeed. On the other hand, the young man, in combination with the title, sounded more scary to me than the chairman.
The world has seen a few of such idealists in the twentieth century...

"Increase our shareprice and yield" and "that would involve us in change" - - yes, words we have heard many times. You were a bit out with your rhythm in a few places. You started off with 4 beats followed by 3 on the next line, and then changed to 3/3 a few times. It is difficult I well know. I often have to go over mine several times. Food Britannia was one I went over several times. This was a 4/3 rhythm. (I expect I'm using correct poetic terms with my 4/3 and 3/3 but I know what I mean, ha ha).
