Preamble

Long time ago all the fleas were bad. Evil biting fleas! Anytime anyone came near they would hop and bite, hop and bite, until finally no more animals would visit the fleas and they grew hungry and sad.

One day Moo Moo wandered into Flealand and all the fleas hopped on Moo Moo and bit and bit! Moo Moo cried and the evil fleas taunted her and told her to run away just like everyone else. But Moo Moo said, “If I run away, all the little fleas will starve, so I will stay.”

All the fleas felt terrible and cried and cried and promised never to bite anyone again.

“But you will all starve,” said Moo Moo.

“Then we will just have to starve,” they said. “But please stay with us, Moo Moo.” So Moo Moo promised she would. Then the fleas saw Moo Moo eating, and they said, “What are you eating, Moo Moo?”

“I am eating grass and vegetables,” Moo Moo said. “Would you like some?”

So the fleas tried some and they liked it and especially carrots and they were never hungry again and all the other animals came back and were great friends with the good fleas and everyone liked the flea people from then on.

How Heavy Saved the Fleas and Pookie Saved Heavy

Heavy was the biggest flea.  He was big and round and soft, and he could not hop very high.  The other fleas made fun of him because of this.  Mostly they laughed at Heavy when he was not around.  But sometimes, poor Heavy would hear them snicker.  Sometimes they would tease him.  Heavy was very sad.

Heavy tried very hard not to be heavy.  But it was no good.  He stayed heavy.

Heavy tried very hard to be a good friend to the fleas and other animals.  Some were friendly back.  But many were still cruel.

Like all the other fleas, Heavy loved Fleanna's cookies.  But Fleanna did not like to give cookies to Heavy.  "He is heavy enough!" she would say.  So when she made cookies, she would give many to everyone except Heavy.  She would give Heavy only a few.  Or sometimes, none at all.

Moo Moo was a good friend to Heavy.  The way the other fleas treated Heavy made her sad.  Moo Moo felt very sorry for poor Heavy.  She would watch the other fleas hop and jump and taunt Heavy.  "Look, Heavy, jump like this!" they would call.  Heavy would try and try, but his hops were short and made the other fleas laugh.  Moo Moo's eyes would fill with tears for her friend.

One day, when Fleanna refused to give Heavy any cookies, Moo Moo said, "Come, Heavy.  You may share my cookies."  Heavy was so happy and glad for a friend like Moo Moo.

But Fleanna became angry with Moo Moo.  "I gave those cookies to you, not Heavy!" she said.

"You were very kind to me, dear Fleanna," said Moo Moo.  "I choose to share my cookies with Heavy."

But Fleanna stayed cross with Moo Moo and decided to give Moo Moo only half as many cookies as before.  Still, Moo Moo shared her cookies with Heavy.

The other fleas began to notice Moo Moo's sadness.  "What is wrong, Moo Moo?" asked the little fleas.  "Your milk is not as sweet as before."

"It is because I am sad," said Moo Moo.

"But why are you sad?" they asked her.

Moo Moo said, "Because Heavy is sad."  She did not say it was because they were cruel.  But the fleas understood.

"We don't mean to be bad to Heavy," they said.  "We only want him to stop being so heavy.  Then he can hop and jump like a proper flea."

"I like my friend Heavy just as he is," said Moo Moo softly.  This made the fleas quiet and thoughtful.

But Fleanna crossed her many arms and said, "I do not care.  No cookies for Heavy."

Now not far away from Flea Town was a swamp.  The little fleas never went there because the mud was thick and dangerous.  Also, the swamp was home to creatures no one could see called invisiblobs.  It was their job to eat the slime from the rocks.  But the invisiblobs did not like the slime.  It was too slimy.

Squish the invisiblob floated into the air and said, "I am tired of eating slime.  I want to eat something else."

"Like what?" asked Squirm.

"I don't know," said Squish.  "But not slime."

Squoosh floated into the air and said, "What about the little fleas not far away?  I am sure they taste better than slime!"  And all the invisiblobs agreed, and floated into the air to go and eat up the little fleas!

Back in Flea Town, Flea was looking through his telescope at things in the sky.  He had a special lens that turned day into night so that he could look at stars anytime he liked.  As he pointed it around, he noticed something funny.  In the darkness, strange silver globs were rising from the swamp, and rushing toward Flea Town.  Flea, being so very clever, guessed at once what they were.

"Invisiblobs are coming!" he cried, hopping through town.  "Run and hide!"

Moo Moo called, "Come to me, my little fleas!  Hide in my thick pelt!"  And that's just what they did.  All the fleas hopped to their sweet Moo Moo and hid in her fur.  Heavy was the last flea, huffing and puffing as he went as fast as he could.  Moo Moo ran to Heavy.  But even then, Heavy was too heavy to hop up on Moo Moo.

Flea looked through his telescope and saw the invisiblobs coming quickly.  "Hurry, Heavy, jump!" he said.  But no matter how hard he tried, Heavy could not jump onto Moo Moo.  So Moo Moo knelt down.  It was just enough for Heavy to hop up.  He hid in Moo Moo just as the invisiblobs arrived!

The invisiblobs saw what was happening.  They were furious!  "That spotty white rock is hiding the fleas!" yelled the invisiblobs.  So they swooped down and began to sting Moo Moo.  "Give us the fleas, white rock!" they said.  Moo Moo cried and bucked, but she would not give up her friends.  The blobs stung and stung, but no good.  Finally, they grew hungry and tired.  They decided to go back to the swamp and eat slime.  "We will be back tomorrow," they told Moo Moo.  "If you don't give us the fleas, we will sting you until you do!"  And they left.

Moo Moo cried.  She was stung all over.  Her little fleas did not know what to do.  They did not want their friend to be stung.  But they did not want to be eaten either.  They soothed Moo Moo and sang her to sleep while they tried to think of what to do.  They could not think of anything.  Finally they went to sleep and hoped they would think of what to do in the morning.

But Heavy did not go to sleep.  Heavy sat up all night thinking.  Heavy thought, "I am the biggest flea.  Perhaps if I go to the invisiblobs, they will eat me, and then they will not need to eat any of the other fleas.  And they will not come to sting Moo Moo."  And so, Heavy wrote a little note to tell his friends not to worry.  Then, he hopped off Moo Moo, and began the long journey to the swamp.

It was dark, and Heavy was very scared.  Every noise frightened him.  But still, he kept on.  He had to be brave for his friends.  Finally, just as the sun began to rise, Heavy arrived at the swamp.  When the invisiblobs woke up, they saw Heavy there.  "Look at that big flea!" they cried.

"Please," said Heavy.  "If I let you eat me, will you leave my friends alone?"

The invisiblobs said, "We will see, big flea.  We will have you for breakfast.  But if you are very tasty, perhaps we will go and eat up the other fleas as well."  They all laughed and began to prepare for breakfast.

Heavy felt terrible!  He was going to be eaten, but the evil blobs might still go and eat up his friends, or at least sting poor Moo Moo.  Heavy sat by the edge of the swamp and cried.

Back in Flea Town, Moo Moo and the fleas were waking up.  Flea looked around with his telescope, but he did not see invisiblobs coming.  Moo Moo was still very sore, but she was worried about her friends.  "Is everyone still safe?" she asked.

Fleanna found Heavy's note, and she cried!  "No!  Heavy has hopped away to let the invisiblobs eat him!"

Moo Moo jumped up.  She cried, "I will not let them eat Heavy!"  And she ran like the wind toward the swamp.  All her little fleas held on tight.

Fleanna held on close to Moo Moo's ear.  She was not angry with Moo Moo anymore.  She knew now that she was really mad with herself, because Moo Moo had made her see how badly she was treating Heavy.  "Oh, Moo Moo," she said.  "Why was I so mean to Heavy?  I would give all the cookies in the world for him to be safe."

"Then I hope we are not too late," Moo Moo said.

Heavy sat at the edge of the swamp, crying and waiting to be eaten by the evil blobs.  They were laughing and getting ready for breakfast.  They were in no hurry.  Just then, Heavy smelled something odd.  It was a strong smell, and he wrinkled up his nose.  "What in the world is that?" he asked.

A furry black face poked through the rushes.  "It is me," said the animal.  "My name is Pookie.  I'm a skunk.  No one likes me because of my smell."

"Oh," said Heavy.  "Well, I am a flea.  My name is Heavy.  No one likes me because I am heavy."

"I don't think that's a good reason not to like someone," said Pookie.

"It doesn't matter anymore," said Heavy.  "I have come to let the invisiblobs eat me, so that they will not eat my friends.  Only, they said that they would eat my friends anyway."

Pookie became very angry when he heard this.  "What a bunch of cheaters!" he said.  "I will not let that happen.  Hop up on me, little flea, and I will help you get away."

"Oh, thank you," said Heavy.  Pookie was a short animal, so even Heavy had no trouble hopping up on him.

But the invisiblobs saw what was going on, and they rushed at Pookie.  "You, stinky rock!" they called.  "Give back that flea!"

Pookie could not see the invisiblobs, of course.  But he could hear them.  So he knew just where they were.  "No, I won't," he told them.

"Then we will sting you!" they cried.

"That's what you think," said Pookie, and he raised his tail and sprayed them all!  Now it was their turn to be stung!  Pookie's spray hurt their eyes and made them choke, and they fell down all dizzy into the mud.  Pookie waddled away with Heavy holding tightly to his fur.

"Which way is your home, Heavy?" asked Pookie.  Heavy showed him, and Pookie hurried off in that direction.

Moo Moo ran as fast as she could.  "Flea," she said, "can you see Heavy with your telescope?"

Flea looked into the swamp.  "No!" he cried.  Everyone was afraid that Heavy had already been eaten.

"Please keep looking!" Moo Moo begged.

Flea kept looking.  "I see invisiblobs falling into the swamp.  They seem hurt!"

"What could have caused that?" the fleas wondered.

Flea looked some more.  "Now I see a skunk... and he is carrying Heavy!"  Moo Moo and all the fleas cheered and rushed to meet them.  Moo Moo kissed her friend Heavy.

Fleanna hopped up to Heavy and hugged him.  "Heavy, I am sorry.  I was wrong to be so mean to you.  I will give you all the cookies you want.  You are a hero!"

"And so is your friend," said Moo Moo.  "Little skunk, you saved our friend Heavy.  What is your name?"

"My name is Pookie," he said, and all the little fleas cheered.  No one had ever been kind to Pookie before.  "But doesn't my smell make you want to send me away?"

"No!" they said.  "Because it keeps the invisiblobs away!  Would you like to be a Friend of Moo Moo?"

Pookie said that he would.  And ever since that day, Pookie has lived with Moo Moo and her little fleas.  And Heavy has stayed heavy, and nobody minds.

Hi

I love your illustrations, they're very cute and I also like the moral theme that runs through your work.

I am a bit confused as to what age group you are aiming at, I would guess judging by the illustrations that you are aiming a quite a young audience?

If this is the case I felt there was just a bit too much prose to hold their attention.

The other thing that slightly bothered me was the fleas eating carrots and other such foods and not biting animals and people any more - I know it's a literary work but for some reason that didn't work for me.

Anyway good luck with all your writing
