Preamble

Long time ago all the fleas were bad. Evil biting fleas! Anytime anyone came near they would hop and bite, hop and bite, until finally no more animals would visit the fleas and they grew hungry and sad.

One day Moo Moo wandered into Flealand and all the fleas hopped on Moo Moo and bit and bit! Moo Moo cried and the evil fleas taunted her and told her to run away just like everyone else. But Moo Moo said, “If I run away, all the little fleas will starve, so I will stay.”

All the fleas felt terrible and cried and cried and promised never to bite anyone again.

“But you will all starve,” said Moo Moo.

“Then we will just have to starve,” they said. “But please stay with us, Moo Moo.” So Moo Moo promised she would. Then the fleas saw Moo Moo eating, and they said, “What are you eating, Moo Moo?”

“I am eating grass and vegetables,” Moo Moo said. “Would you like some?”

So the fleas tried some and they liked it and especially carrots and they were never hungry again and all the other animals came back and were great friends with the good fleas and everyone liked the flea people from then on.

Fleanna Bakes a Moon Ladder

or

Arrival of the Space Cats!

Fleanna was the best baker in all of Flealand.  Many other fleas were good bakers, but no one was as good as Fleanna.  Fleanna could bake anything.  Fleanna could bake cakes.  Fleanna could bake pies.  Fleanna could bake bread.  But what Fleanna could bake best of all was cookies.  A hundred and seven different kinds!

All the other fleas and other animals loved Fleanna’s baking.  Especially her cookies.  Fleanna was very proud.  “I can bake anything,” she told them.

One night Fleanna, Moo Moo, and Flea were sitting together under the stars.  They were looking at the moon.  It was full, and very beautiful.

Fleanna said, “Moo Moo, what is it like on the moon?”

“I do not know,” said Moo Moo.  “I have never been there.”

“I heard about a cow who jumped over the moon,” said Flea.  “I thought that was you, Moo Moo!”

Moo Moo laughed and kissed her little fleas.  “Oh, no,” she said.  “Though I would like to jump that high and see what the moon is like.”

“What do you think it is like?” asked Fleanna.

“I’m not sure,” said Moo Moo.  “But it must be very pretty.”

Flea said, “I have always heard that the moon is made of green cheese.”

Fleanna gasped.  “Moo Moo,” she said, “can that be true?”

“I don’t know,” Moo Moo answered.  “But if so, it must have taken a very big cow to make that much cheese!”

All night long Fleanna tossed and turned.  She could not sleep.  What an exciting idea!  That the moon could be made of cheese!  Fleanna thought, “If I had that much cheese, just think of all the things I could bake!”

Fleanna thought about cheese bread.  Cheese muffins.  Cheese danishes.  Cheesecakes.  Maybe she could invent cheese cookies!  But how could she ever get all that cheese?  The moon was so high!  Fleanna was very sad.  She wanted that cheese so much.

But then, she had an idea.  A wonderful idea!  Fleanna smiled.  Now that she had the answer, she could finally sleep.  She dreamed that she was on the moon, gathering cheese for her baking.  She dreamed that all the other fleas and all the other animals, and especially Moo Moo, were cheering as she baked treat after treat for them.

In the morning, before any other flea was awake, Fleanna set to work.

When they woke up, all the Friends of Moo Moo were greeted with a very strange sight.  They saw two long sticks that went up hills and down valleys, through the woods and past the swap, held together by other sticks, all bound by extra-sticky icing.  At the end was Fleanna.  She had been baking all morning, and had put together a big ladder!

“What in the world is this?” asked the other fleas.

“This is my moon ladder,” said Fleanna.  “I will climb it to the moon, and climb back down with lots of cheese!”

The other fleas cheered!  Fleanna would be the first flea on the moon!

But Moo Moo did not cheer.  She was worried.  Something did not sound right to her.  She feared Fleanna might fall, and be hurt!

“What is wrong, Moo Moo?” asked Fleanna.  “When I come back with cheese, you will not have to work so hard to make milk for us.”

“I know,” said Moo Moo.  “That is a very kind thought, sweet Fleanna.”

“Then I will go at once,” Fleanna said.

Moo Moo did not want to hurt Fleanna’s feelings, and so she smiled and nodded.  But she was still very worried.

The little fleas lined up, all along the ladder.  Together, they raised the ladder into the sky!  It was very high!  They rested it against a tree and cheered Fleanna as she began to climb.  Fleanna knew it would be a long climb, and she must start early to be ready to climb onto the moon when it rose.

Fleanna climbed.  Up, up, up she went.  The wind swayed the ladder this way, then that.  The higher she went, the more it swayed.  “My goodness,” she thought.  “This certainly is a long climb.”  Then she looked down to see how far she had gone.

It was a long way down!

Fleanna cried out.  She was very frightened.  She clung to the ladder, and would not let go.

“What is wrong, Fleanna?” called the other fleas.

“I am frightened!  I want to get down!” cried Fleanna.

It was just as Moo Moo had feared.  “Jump down onto me, Fleanna,” called Moo Moo.  “I am very soft.  You will be safe.”

But Fleanna was too scared to hop down.  She just held tightly to the ladder.

“How will we get her down?” wailed the little fleas.

“Wait,” said Flea.  “The ladder is a giant cookie!  We could eat the ladder, and bring Fleanna down a little at a time!”  Everyone agreed that this was a good idea.

“Go get Heavy,” someone said.  “He is the biggest flea.  He is the flea we need!”  So they hopped off and brought back Heavy.  The other fleas held the ladder steady and Heavy began to eat.

And eat.

And eat.

But finally Heavy was too full.  “I am sorry,” he gasped.  “I cannot eat any more.”

“Oh, no!” the other animals cried.  They began to line up, and each one ate as much of the ladder as they could.  But even when they were all full, Fleanna was still high in the air.  And the wind was rising.

“Help me!” Fleanna cried.

“What are we going to do?” Moo Moo wept.  “Please, Fleanna, hop down on me!”

But Fleanna was still too frightened.  She swayed in the wind.  It looked like she might fall at any moment.

Suddenly, there was a cracking sound.  The cookie ladder was breaking!  Everyone shouted, “Oh, no!” as it came apart.  Poor Fleanna was falling!  Moo Moo ran, trying to get under her little friend!

But just then, a great bird appeared, and swooped down to catch Fleanna, just in the nick of time!  But it wasn’t a bird at all.  It was a cat.  A cat with wings!  “Hello there,” said the cat with wings.  “What is a little flea like you doing so high in the air?”

“Oh, thank you!” cried Fleanna.  “My name is Fleanna, and I was trying to climb to the moon.”

The little fly cat laughed.  “Oh, silly flea!  The moon is too far away.  You cannot get there that way.”

“No?” asked Fleanna, feeling very foolish.

“No,” said the space cat.  “But I know how you can get there.  My name is Shirryl, and I come from outer space.”

Shirryl flew down to Flealand, where all the fleas cheered as she set Fleanna safely on the ground.  Soon a spaceship landed!  Out came two more space cats.  Shirryl told her new friends, “This is RubyOcelot.  She is my mother.  And this is my uncle Feldarin.”  The fleas all hurried to welcome their new friends.

“Shirryl!” said RubyOcelot.  “How come you go off on your own and not say? Dat not nice.  We worry!”

“I am sorry,” Shirryl said.  “But I saw this little flea falling and I had to help!”  And Shirryl told the other space cats how Fleanna wanted to get to the moon.

Uncle Feldarin said, “Well, that’s no problem.  We will take you there!”  And they did!  They took all the little fleas, and Moo Moo, and the other friendly animals, and put them in little space suits.  And then to the moon, where they hopped around all day!  But there was no cheese on the moon at all!

“Never mind, Fleanna,” said Moo Moo.  “I will give you all the cheese I can.”  And when they got home, Fleanna baked cheesecake for everyone.  And they ate the cookie ladder for dessert!

Andy - I may be wrong, but I don't somehow think that this will work as a story for children of today. I hope I am wrong and would like to know if you have tried it on children and what was their reaction? What age children were you aiming this at?
