Preamble
Long time ago all the fleas were bad. Evil biting fleas! Anytime anyone came near they would hop and bite, hop and bite, until finally no more animals would visit the fleas and they grew hungry and sad.
One day Moo Moo wandered into Flealand and all the fleas hopped on Moo Moo and bit and bit! Moo Moo cried and the evil fleas taunted her and told her to run away just like everyone else. But Moo Moo said, “If I run away, all the little fleas will starve, so I will stay.” All the fleas felt terrible and cried and cried and promised never to bite anyone again. “But you will all starve,” said Moo Moo. “Then we will just have to starve,” they said. “But please stay with us, Moo Moo.” So Moo Moo promised she would. Then the fleas saw Moo Moo eating, and they said, “What are you eating, Moo Moo?” “I am eating grass and vegetables,” Moo Moo said. “Would you like some?” So the fleas tried some and they liked it and especially carrots and they were never hungry again and all the other animals came back and were great friends with the good fleas and everyone liked the flea people from then on.
Hopping to Conclusions
Tricksy was a silver vixen who lived in the forest at the edge of Flea Town. She had given up chasing other animals and was a Friend of Moo Moo. All the little fleas loved Tricksy, who carried them around on her back so they could gather the things they needed in the forest. This helped the fleas get around much faster than if they hopped themselves, since Tricksy was one of the fastest animals in the whole world. Tricksy loved the little fleas and their wise friend Moo Moo, and the wonderful food the fleas knew how to make. She was very happy to be their friend. But there was another fox in the woods, a red fox. His name was Crafty, and he was new to the forest. One day when he was sneaking around Flea Town looking for animals to chase, he spotted Tricksy. He thought Tricksy was very beautiful. He decided he would go and talk to her. “Hello,” he said. “My name is Crafty. You are a very pretty vixen.”
Tricksy wagged her tail and said, “Why, thank you! My name is Tricksy.” Crafty said, “Why don’t you come with me, and we will chase the other animals together?” Tricksy smiled and said, “I am very sorry, but I do not chase other animals anymore. I am a Friend of Moo Moo.” Crafty snorted. “What kind of fox are you if you don’t chase other animals?” Tricksy felt bad that Craft had said that, but she was proud. “I’m a fox who chooses to be kind to other animals. Good day to you,” she said, and she walked away. Crafty was angry at Tricksy, so he began to think of a way to force her to go back to her old ways and join him. If he could not get her to change her mind, he reasoned, perhaps he could make the other animals mistrust Tricksy. Over the next little while, Crafty followed Tricksy around. He stayed hidden so that she would not hear, see, or smell him. Whenever she would scratch, or jump, or roll around, a little bit of her fur would shed and fall to the grass. Crafty would wait until Tricksy went away, then run and snatch up the little bits of fur! Soon, he had enough of her silvery fur to make a disguise. He sewed all the silver fur together into a coat, and when he put it on, he looked very much like Tricksy! Crafty waited until Tricksy went away on a trip to another animal town. Then, he put on his disguise, and put his plan into action. Fluffy the sheep was eating grass on the hillside. Long ago, she had been afraid of Tricksy, because Tricksy used to chase her. But they were friends now, and so when Crafty appeared disguised as Tricksy, Fluffy was not frightened. Fluffy called, “Hello, Tricksy! How are you today?” Crafty knew he could not answer, because if he spoke, Fluffy would know he was not really Tricksy. So he just kept quiet as he got closer. “What is wrong?” called Fluffy. “Why don’t you answer, Tricksy?” Crafty waited until he was very close, and then he began to yap loudly at Fluffy! Fluffy was startled and became frightened. “Tricksy, what are you doing?” she cried. “Why are you scaring me? I thought we were friends.” Crafty leapt forward, and Fluffy cried out in fear, and began to run away. Crafty chased Fluffy up hills, down valleys, in and out of the forest and around trees. Finally Fluffy fell down, too tired to run anymore. Crafty ran away and left Fluffy there. He pulled off his disguise and threw it in the river, and waited to see what would happen. Soon, some of the fleas came along and found Fluffy gasping and crying. They hurried up to her! Fleanna said, “Oh no, Fluffy! What is wrong?” Fluffy said, “It was terrible! Tricksy chased me and chased me! I was so frightened! Why would she do that? I thought she was my friend.” Flea said, “That is awful!” Heavy said, “You can never trust a fox!” All the fleas soothed their poor friend Fluffy. When Tricksy came back from her visit, she found the fleas huddled around Fluffy. She wondered what could be wrong. “Hello, friends,” she called. “Is anything the matter?” Fluffy baaaed in fear, and all the little fleas rushed to get between her and Tricksy. Tricksy could see that her friends were very angry. “Go away, Tricksy!” they shouted. Tricksy was frightened. “But what is wrong?” “You chased poor Fluffy! We thought you were our friend!” the fleas called. “But I am your friend!” Tricksy said. “I would never chase Fluffy! I gave you my word! Don’t you remember?” “You have broken your word,” said Flea. “You are no longer our friend! Go away, bad fox, and don’t come back!” Tricksy backed away. “But I swear, I did not do it!” “Fluffy wouldn’t lie,” said the fleas. “Now go, and if you ever come back to Flealand, we will hop on you and bite you until you leave!” Tricksy turned and ran away, crying bitterly. All her friends had turned against her, and her heart was broken. Crafty watched everything from the forest. He felt bad for what he did, but he was lonely, and he wanted a friend. When Tricksy finally stopped running, he came up to her. “What is wrong, Tricksy?” he asked, pretending not to know. “All my friends chased me away,” Tricksy cried. “They said I chased our friend Fluffy. But I never did. I don’t understand.” “They don’t sound like very good friends to me,” said Crafty. “It sounds like they don’t trust foxes. Maybe foxes should stick together.” Tricksy was very unhappy. But she said, “Perhaps you are right. Will you be my friend?” “Yes,” said Crafty, “I will be your friend. And you can be my friend.” All the little fleas led Fluffy home to Flea Town. Moo Moo was there, and she saw how awful Fluffy looked. “Oh my goodness,” she said. “What has happened?” Heavy said, “Oh, Moo Moo, it’s just awful. Tricksy chased and chased Fluffy until she couldn’t run anymore.” “We had to chase Tricksy away,” said Fleanna sadly. Moo Moo said, “Fluffy, is it so?” Fluffy said, “Yes, Moo Moo. Tricksy chased me all over. I was so frightened.” Moo Moo hung her head in sorrow. But something did not seem right to her. “Did she say why she was chasing you?” “No,” said Fluffy. “She never said anything. She just yapped at me.” “That doesn’t sound like our friend Tricksy,” Moo Moo said. “Are you sure it was her?” “A silver fox chased me,” Fluffy said. “I don’t know who else it could have been.” Just then, Pookie the skunk came along. He was friend of Moo Moo and all the little fleas and all their friends. When the fleas saw him, they hopped up to him happily to greet him, especially Heavy, who was his special friend. Heavy said, “Where were you, Pookie? You are all soaking wet!” “I was playing in the river with Darter, the otter. I found something funny, and I wanted to show it to Tricksy. Where is she?” Fleanna said, “Tricksy hurt poor Fluffy, so we sent her away forever.” Pookie was so surprised he fell over! “I can’t believe it!” he said. The fleas nodded sadly. “But it is true,” they said. “But what was it you wanted to show Tricksy?” Pookie said, “We were swimming in the river, and we saw this.” He dropped what he was carrying. It was a silver fox coat. Pookie told them, “I thought Tricksy had fallen in the river, but when we went to help her, we saw it was just fur, and no one inside! I thought she would find it very funny.” Moo Moo looked at the coat. “Are there any other foxes around here?” “Well,” Pookie said, “there is another one, and he used to chase me. His name is Crafty. But he is red, not silver.” “But what would he look like if he wore this coat?” asked Moo Moo. All the little fleas gasped. “He would look like Tricksy,” said Flea. Fluffy said, “Now I am not so sure it really was Tricksy who chased me after all.” “What if it was Crafty in disguise?” said Pookie. “But why?” asked Heavy. “That is what we must find out,” said Moo Moo. “Oh, my sweet little fleas, will you please hop as fast as you can, and find Tricksy? We must let her tell her side of the story.” All the fleas felt terrible. They had chased away their friend Tricksy without hearing her story. “Yes, Moo Moo,” they said, and they all set out in all directions to find the silver vixen. Tricksy was sitting at the edge of the forest with her new friend, Crafty. But she was still very sad and hurt inside that her friends the fleas had sent her away. “Don’t be sad,” said Crafty. “They were not real friends if they chased you off.” “But I don’t understand it,” Tricksy said. “A silver fox chased Fluffy. But I am the only silver fox around here. Aren’t I?” Crafty was uncomfortable. “Maybe there is another. But what difference does it make now? Those fleas are no good. Forget them.” It was Pookie and Heavy who found Tricksy. Heavy was on Pookie’s back and he could see Tricksy at the edge of the forest. “There she is!” he told Pookie. “And she is with another fox!” “A red fox?” asked Pookie. “Yes!” said Heavy. “I’ll bet it’s Crafty,” Pookie said. They hurried as fast as Pookie could waddle. They called out to Tricksy. Tricksy looked up. “It is my friends, Heavy and Pookie,” she said. Crafty said, “They have probably come to tease you. Come on, let’s run away.” But Pookie gave a whistle, and all the other animals came running. Fleas, squirrels, beetles, otters, rabbits, sheep... everyone who had been searching for Tricksy. They all arrived together, from all directions. Tricksy was happy to see them, even if they no longer thought of her as their friend. But Crafty was not happy to see them. He tried to slink away. “Stay right there!” Pookie told him. Crafty knew he was caught. If he tried to get away, Pookie would spray him, and it would sting his eyes and nose. “Oh, Tricksy,” cried the fleas. “We are sorry. We should have believed you when you said you did not chase Fluffy. We should have known it was some other fox. A fox who is not friendly.” “Like Crafty,” said Pookie. “That is silly,” said Crafty. “Tricksy is silver. I am red.” Moo Moo came up, carrying the silver coat. She dropped it in front of Crafty. “We think it was you in disguise,” she said. Tricksy gasped at Crafty. “Is it true?” she asked. Crafty knew he had been found out. “It is true,” he sighed. “I only did it because I was lonely. I wanted Tricksy to be my friend.” Now the fleas were as angry as they had ever been! “You wicked fox!” they cried. “You chased Fluffy, and you made us turn away our friend Tricksy! Run away before we bite you all over!” But Tricksy jumped in front of Crafty. All the fleas said, “Tricksy! Why are you protecting Crafty? He made us chase you away.” “Yes, he did. Do you feel sorry about that?” she asked. All the fleas said, “We feel terrible for our mistake. Can you forgive us?” “Of course,” she said. “You are my friends and I love you.” “Then let us chase away this evil fox for you!” they cried. “Wait!” said Tricksy. “I know what Crafty did was wrong. But he only wanted a friend. If we were all his friends, then he would never have to do such things.” Tricksy turned to Crafty. “Crafty, would you promise to never chase the other animals again, if we were your friends?” Crafty said, “I never had any friends. Yes, if you would be my friends, I would promise to never hurt you.” Tricksy turned to the other animals. She said, “I forgave you. Can’t you forgive him?” The fleas grumbled, and finally said, “If Fluffy will forgive Crafty, so will we.” Everyone turned to Fluffy. Moo Moo said, “What do you say, Fluffy?” Fluffy smiled. “Tricksy has forgiven us for our mistake. It is only right that we forgive Crafty, and give him a chance.” All the animals cheered Fluffy, and they welcomed Crafty. From that day on, Crafty never hurt another animal, and was a true friend to them all. And all the fleas agreed never again to jump to conclusions. Or even hop to them!
