Preamble
Long time ago all the fleas were bad. Evil biting fleas! Anytime anyone came near they would hop and bite, hop and bite, until finally no more animals would visit the fleas and they grew hungry and sad.
One day Moo Moo wandered into Flealand and all the fleas hopped on Moo Moo and bit and bit! Moo Moo cried and the evil fleas taunted her and told her to run away just like everyone else. But Moo Moo said, “If I run away, all the little fleas will starve, so I will stay.” All the fleas felt terrible and cried and cried and promised never to bite anyone again. “But you will all starve,” said Moo Moo. “Then we will just have to starve,” they said. “But please stay with us, Moo Moo.” So Moo Moo promised she would. Then the fleas saw Moo Moo eating, and they said, “What are you eating, Moo Moo?” “I am eating grass and vegetables,” Moo Moo said. “Would you like some?” So the fleas tried some and they liked it and especially carrots and they were never hungry again and all the other animals came back and were great friends with the good fleas and everyone liked the flea people from then on.
Meet the Beetles
Moo Moo was very proud of her little fleas. Once they used to hop and bite other animals, and no one liked them, but now they lived peacefully and ate vegetables, and had many many friends. Moo Moo would go on walks from Fleatown, and other animals would wave to her and ask how the little fleas were doing. This made Moo Moo very happy. Pookie lived in Fleatown too. Pookie was a skunk and a friend of Moo Moo and the fleas. One day, when Moo Moo was out walking, she met Pookie coming the other way. "Oh, Moo Moo," said Pookie, "it is terrible! The little bugs in Beetleborough are starving!" "What?" cried Moo Moo. "What has happened?" "A huge flood," Pookie told her. "All of their crops have died, and they have run out of things to eat!" "Oh no!" said Moo Moo. "Show me, Pookie!" And so Moo Moo knelt down so Pookie could climb up on her, and he led her to the town where the beetles lived. All the little beetles were huddled together. Their homes were wrecked, and they were crying. "Hello, Moo Moo," they said. "Pookie must have told you about our trouble." "Is everyone safe?" Moo Moo asked. "Yes," said Buzz, the chief beetle. "We were very lucky. We all got to high ground before the water ruined our homes. But all of our food is gone." Snap the beetle said, "We have planted more, but they won't be ready to eat for many months. We don't know what to do until then, Moo Moo. We are doomed." "You are not doomed," said Moo Moo. "Because you have friends." Right away, Moo Moo gave the little beetles her milk. The beetles were very grateful to their friend Moo Moo. "Thank you, Moo Moo. That will sure help." Pookie said, "I want to go home, Moo Moo, and bring the beetles some of my food." "What a good idea," Moo Moo said. "Let's go back to Fleatown, and gather what we can." "Oh, thank you, Pookie and Moo Moo," cried the beetles. "You are true friends." And so, Pookie and Moo Moo hurried back to Fleatown. Pookie went to his den, and Moo Moo went to her barn, and they each gathered up half their food. "What are you doing, Moo Moo?" asked Fleanna, the little baker flea. "I am gathering up half of all my food for the poor little beetles in Beetleborough," Moo Moo told her. "But why are you doing that?" asked Fleanna. "Because they have had a flood and they are starving, sweet Fleanna." "Are they? I didn't know that." "Will you help too, Fleanna?" Fleanna grumped. She liked all the food she made, and shared it with the other fleas and Moo Moo, and animals who visited. She did not like the idea of having less, or maybe running short of food. But she knew how kind a heart Moo Moo had, and how Moo Moo had taught the little fleas to be good and how to have friends, so she said, "Yes, Moo Moo, I will help. Tell me what to do." Meanwhile, Pookie was pushing a little cart with half of his food in it. His friend Heavy hopped up and said, "Yum, Pookie! Are you going on a picnic?" Pookie laughed and let Heavy hop up on him. "No, Heavy, you silly flea. Moo Moo and I are taking half our food to Beetleborough, because the beetles are starving." "Oh no!" said Heavy. "It is awfully good of you to do that, Pookie." “I must hurry and get this food to them, Heavy,” said Pookie. “Please excuse me.” And Pookie headed off, pushing his cart. Heavy hopped home, where he had so much food. Heavy was the biggest flea, and one thing Heavy liked to do was eat! He liked having lots of food and didn’t like the idea of giving it away. But when he though about the poor little beetles with nothing to eat, he felt ashamed for being so greedy. He especially felt ashamed when he thought of his friend Pookie, sharing his food! Heavy decided he must share his food as well. Flea saw Heavy pushing a little cart with lots of food piled up in it. “Where are you going with all that food, Heavy?” asked Flea. “I am following Pookie to Beetleborough,” said Heavy. “Pookie said they are starving there, and I want to help.” “I did not know that,” said Flea. “If you are helping, maybe I will help too.” And Flea told all the other fleas he saw about the poor beetles. Most of the fleas did not want to give up their food, but they thought of the poor hungry beetles, and soon they all gathered up half their food, and set off together. Moo Moo was in Beetleborough, helping out the beetles and sharing her food. The beetles loved Moo Moo for being so kind. Then they saw Pookie coming with his food. They all hugged him, and began to feel better because now they had enough food for a few days. But when they saw all the fleas of Fleatown coming with carts of food, the little beetles cried with joy. There was enough food for them to eat until their crops grew again! They were so grateful, they did not know what to say. “Oh, my little fleas,” said Moo Moo. “I am so very proud of you.” “I feel silly,” said Fleanna when she rode home on Moo Moo. “I gave away all that food.” But secretly, even Fleanna felt good for sharing. “You did a very generous thing,” Moo Moo told her. “Do not feel silly!” Many months passed, and the beetles grew new crops and could feed themselves again. But they never forgot what the fleas and Pookie and Moo Moo did for them. One day, a hailstorm came, and it crushed down all the crops of the poor fleas! It smashed their store house, and left them with nothing to eat. “What will we do?” wailed the little fleas. “We will starve.” “You must jump on me, little fleas, and bite, like in the old days,” said Moo Moo. “It is the only way.” “No, never!” cried the fleas. “We will never bite anyone again, especially you, Moo Moo. We will starve first.” “Oh, my little fleas,” wept Moo Moo. Over in Beetleborough, the beetles had seen the storm over Fleatown, and they were worried. They sent Snap over to make sure the fleas were okay. When she saw what happened, she flew back to Beetleborough as fast as she could. The poor little fleas sat huddled together, crying, eating the last crumbs they had. They were so hungry, and very sad. They did not know what was to become of them. But suddenly there came the sound of many many marching feet. It was the beetles! And not just the beetles, but many of the other animals who were friends of the fleas and beetles. And all of them brought with them gifts of food, enough to last for months! “You have friends, fleas,” said Buzz. “We will never let anything bad happen to you.” And suddenly all the fleas understood that they were not weaker for giving away their food. They were stronger, because they had many friends. All the animals were together now, and no one had to be afraid anymore. Moo Moo’s kindness had spread to them all.
