CATS

I love cats with their furry faces,
Triangular eyes and feline graces
Who sit and stare into empty spaces,
Seeing what we can't see.

I love cats with their smiley faces,
Who purr when you stroke in all the right places
And run with the wind invisible races,
Hearing what we can't hear.

I love cats with their beautiful faces,
Soft little paws that pat shoelaces
Who love exploring cardboard cases,
Knowing what we can't know.

I love cats with intent, staring faces,
Watching a fledgling try out a few paces,
But, if he should pounce and with fangs embraces,
I snatch him up and put him inside...

                       *
Where he watches me with furious eyes
Chattering teeth and lashing tail,
Wailing terrible Siamese cries
He'll kill me for sure, he will not fail!

Until I chop up some animal heart
Won't touch tinned stuff, he's too smart,
And wave it under his snooty nose
He sniffs aromas , drops his pose.

With gnashers going he scoffs the lot
Then washes himself from head to bot,
He stretches his legs until they shake
Then onto my lap - oh, what a fake!

But I love him!

  Sorry, see above!

I don't write for children normally, but thought I'd have a go. This needs a lot of work as I switch from one form to another, and it's a bit of a hotchpotch!

The first half I wrote a while ago and the second half just now, which is why it is a bit rushed. Hope you like it.

I have just put another poem on, but as it was in the poems section before, it is dated July! It is called 'A Precious Gift'. I know you are fans of Josie's work, so you may have seen it on her website.

Hello Audrey - I'm so glad to have another children's poet join me. ha ha. I think children would love your poem about cats, but I think like you that you ought to do a bit of work on it. Why not make it a story about a particular cat? We've had cats in our family and you can train them not to catch birds. They, like dogs, only usually want to please. My little cat had a face that wrinkled into a little smile before a big purr came. It was first thing in the morning when she used to come upstairs and jump on the bed. She knew she wasn't supposed to do that, but with a smile like that I couldn't get cross. ha ha. On the whole, though, I prefer dogs.

Well, I do like dogs but have always been a cat person. I did have a Siamese for 18 years, and she would be furious with me for changing her sex! I've always had cats:
Sheba, Tuesday, Alex, Tammy and Jemima, and Toffee.

I agree it does need a hell of a lot of work. That is my trouble, I rush to get things finished when I should take my time.

Hi Audrie, I loved this poem just for its content! I've got two beautiful moggies with very distinct personalities - *plug alert* - in fact I've started writing some short stories for children about them.

I think you've captured the essence of the cat very well - I particularly liked "exploring cardboard cases" (although in the case of one of mine, it's plastic shopping bags - slightly more dangerous!) and the cat "dropping his pose" - they are such fakers, aren't they?
