He stopped, she said
By andybyers

Related to a piece of fictional prose I started some time ago but never really took anywhere. :)

He came from me, she said
no longer afraid of the flame
    and huddled close,
a house cat and builder at once
And he was so pretty, she said
Looked like me; he would
Sing dance run
And one day, one day
    tail wondering, forgetting to forget
One day he was sad
And then he stopped
Singing dancing running
I tried to make him but he wouldn't
And he fell off his bones, she said
while the fire danced for her like her dead son
Fell off his bones...
Why did that happen? she asked me
    asked the fire
Why did he stop?
    and I was silent
yes, I was the silent one.

It's beautiful. At first I thought it was too abstract for me, but because the writing was so alluring I read it over many times, and am glad I did.

I’m not certain that beautiful is a word that I would use to describe this.
Trying to come to terms with loss but not understanding the concept of death, is the way that I read this, although with your work I could be way off the mark.
Beguiling rather than beautiful, I was particularly drawn to “Fell off his bones”.

All the best,
Steve.
