The cat and the door
Written by fellpony

Why do cats ask for doors to be opened, but decline to go through them?

PS - I wrote this BEFORE I read Caroline's tale about her cats - honest!

I’m a very small cat.
I’m asleep on the mat
and I dream with my whiskers a-twitching.
But here on the floor
the click-click of the door
makes me ask – what’s outside of this kitchen?

So I rise to my feet
that are rounded and neat
and I yawn and I stand here a-stretching;
one leg then another,
strop claws on a cover;
they have to be purrfectly fetching.

Now open this door!
I reach with my paw
But I’m not tall enough for the bolt-slide.
Perhaps if I  miaow
You would demonstrate how
I can change the inside for the outside?

Ah – thank you for that.
I will stand on the mat
and smell the wet breeze of the morning
Please don’t give me a hand!
I’m quite happy to stand
with my eyes, ears and nostrils absorbing.

The garden’s still there,
but I’ll stand here and stare
till I’ve checked all is well on the outside.
I'm happy with that.
I’ll return to the mat
and resume my warm sleep by the fireside.

So I curl in a ball
and I make myself small
for I’ve settled my mind of all doubt.
But I open one eye
and I utter a sigh:
Won’t you shut the door now I’ve looked out?

Brilliant! This is something Murray does on a regular basis. I promise I won't steal it, fellpony!

I liked the rhythm of the piece, and the narration was spot on - quite what I imagine when trying to work out what's going on in a cat's head.

As I read this I could picture my cat doing just that, even down to the stropping, on my new Ikea sofa!
I loved the humour in this, that partly came from the stucture and rhyming. It's not a limeric form is it? It had that bouncy dum-di-dum rhythm that always seems to hint at something more. I wondered if it had a name.
Really well observed and I liked the cat's attitude, you got that right.
My cat does it slightly differently; he gets me to open the door and just sits there for ages neither in nor out while we all freeze. It's true what they say:- dogs have owners, cats have staff.

Plus ça change ............. TS Eliot's observations, relayed through Mr. Lloyd-Webber, on this subject. Still as true as the day they were first written!! :grin

The Rum Tum Tugger is a terrible bore

When you let me in, then I want to go out
I'm always on the wrong side of every door
And as soon as I'm at home, then I'd like to get about
I like to lie in the bureau drawer
But I make such a fuss if I can't get out

Just one of several verses ...... haven't listened to that CD for ages, must put it on now while I work ...........
Savoy, anyone?

Just tried singing this and I've inadvertently used the same rhythm as W S Gilbert in Yeomen of the Guard -

O a private buffoon
is a lighthearted loon
if you listen to popular rumour:
from the morn to the night
he's so merry and bright
and he bubbles with wit and good humour.

It goes well to the same tune, but i didn't do it consciously.

Enjoyed this very much. Liked the rhythm - very sing-song. (as you now point out) Purrfect is a nice touch. You have caught the cat well - although ours is learning only to stand and purr at a door if he means it. Open door, gentle nudge in his pencil sharpener. Works every time.

Phil.
Yes, lovely poem,

we cat lovers know exactly what you mean. Although I did have a Siamese who learnt to leap at the door handle and hang on it until the door opened. But that was the inner doors, of course.

I love your poem. It is very well written and so much reminds me of my very own cat that I have at home. I have also read it to my neice a couple of times and she loves it.
