Martyr
By Fledermaus
10 October 2007
Music echoes over the central square
Foreigners wave flags, listen to the song
I too hear the voice, passionate and clear
And weep even though I don't know the tongue

The singer's voice is full of true passion
This song is not about some love affair
This is a man who has truly suffered
Pains I myself probably could not bear

Here I stand in a Western paradise
Unaware and detatched, afraid to live
While you fight your non-violent struggle
And sacrifice the dearest thing to give

How futile are my own little problems?
I think of other songs which made me cry
And then, martyr, at last I envy you
You have a cause and the courage to die

Oh Dear

Oh how very sad. Yes, we often don't have a clue about the terrible suffering of other people. How very well you put things in your poem, and how beautifully you wrote it also. (bear ---- not bare). I know English is difficult. I went to Leeds a few weeks' ago and there was a protest in one of the main squares. Poor people who were frightened to be sent home for what they would have to face there. Imagine being frightened of your own people! We are so lucky to live in our country. Thank you Fledermaus for your words.

Thanks Josie.
I corrected it.
I don't even know where they were from. Somewhere from the Middle East I guess, but I didn't recognize the flags. The music was so powerful that it was hard not to cry. I recall I had that too with some political songs from other countries, so it triggered imaginations of people like Ghandi, who were prepared to die for their cause... I'm glad I am not in their desperate position, but I envy their courage.

Interesting. The emotions come through.

Admirable words, yet I have mixed feelings about a martry's death.

Phil.

Thanks Phil.
Of course, like probably every sane being, I hope to grow old and die peacefully in my sleep. But I also think people who are ready to lay down their life in peaceful protests are incredibly brave.
If I had but a fraction of their courage I would probably laugh about the things I might now consider problems.

Very emotive poem and your empathy shines through.

I don't think I would be brave enough to be a martyr, but I am awed by the people who feel strongly enough to die for their beliefs.
