Watch Over Me
By Snodlander
11 October 2007
There was a poetry competition for poems about haloween.  I thought I would counter all the candy and pumpkin entries.  I prefer savoury.

And in case you're wondering, no, none of my other poems have placed.  Judges, wouldn't know artistic genius if it rhymed!

My Pet! You sleep upon your bed
And dream your dreams of paradise.
Your hair unbound halos your head.
Your face is clear and free from vice

My Chick! You stir and turn your head
And in your sleep you frown and pout.
But you lie safe, all ill has fled,
For lock and bolt can't keep me out.

My Lamb! You're sweet and full of life.
I lick my lips and in my mind
Your taste rips through me like a knife.
I see the red and white entwined.

My Calf! The moonlight pouring through
Washes all hue from off your skin.
I stand here, just adoring you,
Your veal-white flesh invites me in.

My Dish! You look so soft and sweet
But still the meat is yet too rare.
A day I'll wait and then I'll eat.
Till then I'll take a farmer's care.

Buon appetito to Halloween Snodlander. I thought we were being led into "animals and their place on the master's bed" but then continued . . . . Very good and tasty too.

Clever poem, and a good antidote to the sickly stuff of Hallowe'en (which I ignore, being a good Anglican, for All Saints' Day the following morning).

Speaking as one who has farmed chickens/sheep/cattle, you did provoke me to thought; and I must admit I seldom actually thought of my "products" in such literal terms. Not until they'd undergone that last great change, anyway. Once without the skin or feathers, then yes, my view coincided with yours.

Enjoyed - and as Sue says, pretty clever too.
