For Children
Old King Compost
By Josie
12 October 2007

Children love monsters.  I found one in the compost bin the other day, but he wasn't dear old King Compost.  He was a huge green slug that had eaten enough of my compost to make him feel sick and he was trying to get out of the lid and go for plants in my garden.  I have tried not to make this monster absolutely frightening.  In fact I have tried to make him a little bit endearing so that children won't be frightened of compost bins.

By our back garden wall sits a black compost bin.
Would you lift up the lid?  Would you dare to look in?
Inside you might see a monster’s fierce eyes.
No?  Changed your mind?  You’re ever so wise.

Just step over here.  Can you now hear him chew?
Yes - he’s chomping and chewing his dinner all through.
Now stop and then listen.  Just what can you hear?
Ooooh! A very loud burp. but there’s not much to fear.

It’s dear Old King Compost who lives in this bin.
He has round yellow eyes and a large hairy chin.
Deep down in the dark sitting there all alone
Is this ugly old monster upon his big throne.

He dines upon fruits and rotting old greens –
They’re gobbled up quickly; his plate  is soon clean.
               Look!  Father is throwing him the green garden waste;
All that grass and those weeds have a wonderful taste.

He doesn’t go shopping and, of course, never cooks  -
He’s no time in his life for good toys or nice books.
                He won't even wash or comb his long hair;
He couldn’t care less what clothes he will wear.

Each day of his life is spent gnawing and crunching –
A nap after dinner, then back to the munching.
As he does a good job, we will never complain.
Good Old King Compost.  Long may he reign!

But realy scary monsters aren't vegetarian. They eat humans and are very dangerous. :p

Thinking of cute monsters though, I think you're right.
Do you know Oscar from Sesame Street? He lives in a garbage bin and is green and hairy, just like your king compost. :)
Hi Fledermaus

No, of course they are not. I remember now from my children's fairy stories: Hansel and Gretal - Red Riding Hood's granny? Gruesome! No, dear old King Compost is just a greedy old gentleman, of course. As for Oscar from Sesame Street - ah, yes I have seen him years ago. Munch Munch Munch!

Your a gardener then, like me
I love to grow nice vegetables

You're better at poetry though.

Ha ha very good - Love the bit about daring to look in, and the 'very loud burp' really tickled my fancy. How stange, I didn't realise you had written a poem about a compost bin. It seems that I'm slowly writing a story to pair up with every poem that you have written. Mind you the thought of writing over 400 stories sounds a bit daunting!

Kellie :grin
Marvellous!

Great stuff as ever Josie - we now have your compost slug, who refuses to wash or comb his hair, and now Kellie's compost worm who insists on cleaning his teeth!

Waaaaah! It's getting better and better here on the children's site!

Cheers!

Thank you two very much indeed. I like this poem too. ha ha. Perhaps you shouldn't have your favourites when you write them, but this is one of mine. I've told the two little children in the house behind the wall that they sometimes disturb Old King Compost when they are fighting, but they gave me a funny look and it didn't bother them. They went to my compost bin and looked in and said: "We know you. You've just made up that story." How nice to be well known by children, ha ha.
