Time to Let the Summer Go
By Josie
24 October 2007

In the northern hemisphere, as we look out of our windows at the misty mornings, I think we can well and truly say sadly that it's time to let the summer go.

It’s time to let the summer go –
To allow the autumn winds to blow.
                   It’s the season to shake off the leaves;
To find a home for harvest sheaves.

It’s time to let in the misty morns
               Draw sharp back the awakening dawn;
Time to drop the ripening fruits
Send migrating birds upon their routes.

Clear up the leaves, plant bulbs for spring.
At Thanksgiving services loudly sing –
Thank God for autumn’s golden glow
                 Forerunner to the winter’s snow.

Time to let the summer go....? What summer? The last good sun I remember was mid April. Miserable year as far as weather goes. So much for global warming, more like global dampening.

Sorry Josie, I find it hard to get excited about Autumn when Summer hasn't yet arrived.

Glad you've had something to enjoy over in Yorkshire anyway. They do things properly there.

Enjoy Autumn Josie. Here the leaves just fall in one big damp clump. Lancashire kids don't even know what crispy means.

Phil.

I've upset one of the team! We've had lots and lots of warm days and sunshine during September and October. That was "summer". (Sorry about Lancashire). I think you've been in your classroom when the sun has shone in Lancashire, because there have been some nice sunny days there too.

"It’s time to let the summer go –"

I didn't know we had any choice in the matter. The seasons are unstoppable and,I suppose, all we can do is make the best of it, which you always seem to do, josie.
You always find something positive to say, which I find quite re-assuring.
Thanks for kind email. I'll reply soon

I like autumns and winters :grin
Summers have either good weather, in which case it's often too hot to my taste, or bad weather, in which case everyone complains and they still lack the charm of the other seasons.
Nothing better than the sound of rain against the window, or to open the curtains and see the world is covered in snow (which hardly ever happens were I live anymore -climate change- and thus makes it extra special)...

Liked it.
Roll on spring

My guess, Josie, is that, like me, you went for a nice leaf-rustling walk in the sun at the weekend. Roll on spring – my favourite time of year.

p.s. I liked your poem, though I wanted it to be longer.
To You All

Thanks for your review. Jane: No, we have no say in the matter, 'tis true. I've seen the words "Time to let the summer go" on a poem this week, but can't think who wrote these words. Well, Fledermaus, you'll soon be in heaven as rain is forecast. Ian - shhhh - don't mention leaf-rustling walks in Yorkshire and upset the man from Lancashire again! We had the sunshine too here in Yorkshire didn't we? ha ha (shhhh! - keep that quiet too).
Perhaps we should be grateful ........

........ for our non-starter summer!
California have just had the driest summer since records began (even if they're still in nappies over there after barely 200 years since Columbus got lost on a day out .... :grin :grin ) - and look what good it's done them

Don't get me wrong: I have friends in Southern Cal and I worry about them all the time, but you CAN have too much of a good thing - including hot summer weather!

If you want sunshine, you should all come to live in Eastbourne, where we have sunshine most of the time, even when other places are getting rain.

I think Beachy Head 'heads' the bad weather off!
