As if fries aren't already their national symbol :p Just a bit of nonsense.
Antwerp - The Flemish regional government has declared war
on French Fries. In a proclamation they urged the Flemish to boycot
fast-food restaurants which did not serve Flemish Fries.
" It's unpatriotic to eat French fries. It's francophone cultural infiltration", a spokesman explains to us.
" Furthermore, French fries are thin and weak, Flemish fries are thick
and strong. Even a Dutchman could understand that this must have an
impact on one's... masculinity. It's not for nothing the English and
Americans consider the French sissies. It's all because of the French
fries."
In a reaction fast-food restaurants supporting national unity have mixed
French fries with Flemish fries and the king is to declare this new
dish a symbol of Belgium. Parliament is to yet to decide wether or not
it should have a place on the tricolour or the national coat of arms.

Crossed chips rampant on the coat of arms sounds very good.
I agree, French fries are nothing, lets stick to the good old fashioned thick cut chip.

I agree, thin french fries are for cissies, give me a good old fashioned English/Flemish fat chip anyday.

Have visited Belgium and sampled their frites, they weren't too bad, french fries in France were not as good. I haven't had the pleasure of visiting your part of the world yet so can't comment on your chips!

I too had not reaiised that there was any such thing as a 'Flemish Fry'. Though I do believe that chips sold at Ibrox are referred to as ' Dutch tatties': apparently in honour of the potato feast that was had to celebrate the victory at the Battle of the Boyne..... Well there you go...

Coosh: That'd be nice. They already have three colours and three regions... Or what about a Brussels sprout to represent Brussels?
Tracey: Dutch chips aren't very special. I think they fall in between the two. Flemish fries are renowned here. Just as icecream has to be "Italian", chips are one of those things people immediately associate with Belgium (just as chocolate, lace and certain brands of beer).
