No homeland

Overly dramatic I presume, for someone who never lived somewhere else but in the Netherlands... ;) Perhaps all young people are just restless.

Ever since Íth saw Banba's pleasant shores
The Gaelic tribes knew where to build their home
Oh, how I envy the Irish people
Knowing where to build their halls and houses

Ever since Moses saw the promised land
Jewish tribes knew where to found a nation
Though their sandy land is bloodstained and scorched
They knew where to build their huts and temples

Ever since Leif threw a log over board
The Vikings have lived in the Smoky Bay
Barren and cold, their winters long and dark
They at least knew where to moor their longships

Ever since Kupe spotted the white cloud
Aotearoa is Maori land
Though they now share it with Pakeha
They know where to bury their ancestors

I belong to many different tribes
From Frisian marshes to yellow clay
From the Middle Kingdom to Evenland
All under Heaven is my home. I'm lost

Ever since

Ever since I came to Yorkshire - - - 20 years ago now. But you know Fledermaus, you don't have to win a war these days to take over a country. The English have just sold their expensive homes and moved into Spain, Italy (Tuscany), France, and most have moved to Australia where their pensions will go twice as far as in this country - - and who can blame them? As for fighting them off, many countries have welcomed them and their money with open arms (I think). So where is homeland for the Brits?

Hi Josie. It's not so much that those people claimed lands, but more that their descendants stayed there for such a long time. The main idea for this poem came firstly from the fact that the name of the people who settled in southern China during the Ming dynasty ais still 'Guest families'. And secondly that I have my roots in two different continents and completely different civilizations.
For the Gael, the Jews, the Icelanders and the Maori it's easy to know where their home is, but for many people it isn't that simple. But then, I'm in an overly philosophical mood. ;)
