Radical changes to Christmas Pantomimes.
By woody44

I have no particular axe to grind, but I thought, with my three-year-old grandson in mind, I`d get this off my chest.

What is believed to be a ground-breaking experiment in Pantomimes takes place this Christmas when for the first time ever no soap stars will be taking any of the leading roles. A spokesperson for the Theatre Arts Group  said he thought audiences were beginning to tire of famous faces just going through the motions and picking up a fat cheque at the end of the run. `People want committed actors and actresses in what are, after all, very demanding roles, and I`m afraid over the last few years  these so-called stars have not been putting their hearts and souls into their parts`
Mr Jack Furniss, Chairman of the Out-Of-Work Actors Guild, said he was delighted with the news. `Perhaps now some of our members, many of whom have not worked in the industry for a number of years will be tempted to go along to the auditions.
It is understood the soap stars may still be allowed on stage, but only as the front or rear end of a pantomime horse. However the spokesman said he did not think there would be many takers.
When asked how he felt about this daring new turn of events,  a huge rabbit standing outside Sainsburys said he was absolutely thrilled.

It's been a long while since I've seen a panto. When I was little you'd get one famous face, usually a TV comedian. I don't know what the soap stars are really like at these shows, but putting them into the pantomime horse sounds like a very good idea.

The rabbit was a nice touch - is there a panto version of Watership Down?

Enjoyed.

My four year old granddaughter is due to see her first pantomine this year too. I doubt if she will recognise any stars if they are in the cast, as her parents don't let her watch TV other than Cbeebies.

It was a good read.

Good read.

We take the whole school to the panto every year. Always impressed by the energy the actors must have to put in - but hate the noise. Can I nominate B Windsor for the back end of a horse? Her face is wrinkled and puckered enough to be a sphincter.

I like the idea of soap stars playing panto horses, at least it shouldn't be a problem getting into character.
I love the way you twisted the whole tradition round, and the ending added a delightful surreal touch.
Very funny,Roger. Don't be a stranger here we need your humour on the site
cheers

Languishing in deepest Devon at the moment, trying to get the hang of something called a laptop....
As for that rabbit in Cambridge Gerard, amazing when I think it was an idea I just pulled out of a hat (sorry!)
Thanks Paul. Ben. Jean. Phil, Jane and Gerard.
