My Grandfathers Friend
By maipenrai
14 November 2007
A Gentleman would always wear one
along side his topcoat and hat,
an item of high fashion,
a necessary accessory
when walking out.

the Ruffian in the slums
wore his with pride
dreaming someday
God or Mammon
would smile on him.

Peelers on the beat
in olde London Town
would never be without
their trusty friend
to help the people on their way.

now it is just a curiosity
to be haggled over in the olde curiosity shoppe,
how sad for my
Grandfathers Friend
the stylish little
Fob Watch.

Nice sentiment here. The God or Mammon stanza was interesting.

I think "a long" should be "along" and "a item" should be "an item". I also didn't like the line break of "over in/the olde", but that's just my opinion.

Those aside, I liked it very much.
Thanks

Nice poem. A bit like a riddle, but luckily you told us in the end.
