The right shoes
By punchy
16 November 2007
Inspired by my mother who has just recovered from a broken ankle from wearing dainty shoes while out walking in the country park. Please feel free to suggest any types of shoe I have missed.

It's very important to wear the right shoes
So think very hard about which ones you choose

Don't wear your flippers when you're out for a run
Its really quite dangerous and never been done

And climbing in flip flops when the ground is all hilly
Well that's never been clever, it's actually silly

Don't wear your ballet shoes out in the yard
If you slip over the ground is quite hard

And when you sit down in front of the telly
Your mum won't be pleased if you're in your old wellies

Never but never wear sandals in snow
You'll be sure to lose them and freeze off your toes

And when on the beach don't wear just socks
You may cut your feet, you're best wearing crocs

Don't wear high heels when you swim in a pool
You don't want to drown and it doesn't look cool

And never wear school shoes while taking a bath
It certainly won't make anyone laugh

When at the library choosing your books
you mustn't wear tap shoes, you'll get funny looks

Don't play indoors in your boots made for football
You'll damage the solid wood floor in the front hall

And when at the gym , being athletic
Don't wear your slippers you'll just look pathetic

Walking to school in bare feet is absurd
And there's always a risk of stepping in .........
Yell

Take care and beware of those who wear brogues:

9 times out of 10 they'll turn out to be rogues .

I like it Patterjack, What would you call smart shoes a boy would wear to say a wedding or function? could only think best shoes or party shoes?

I think children would like this Paula, but I still think it is a bit too long for their attention span. If you look at the work of modern children's poets, they usually write shorter poems. I know from reading to children in the schools that their attention span is not long.

This poem would be awesome with pictures. I can just see the hilarious illustrations of folks doing various things in absurd, unsuitable footwear.

As for shoes one might wear to a wedding or so forth. Where I come from, we would call those "dress shoes."

I totally agree with High Treason - with illustrations it would be amazing! If it is thought to be too long for the target audience, I'd suggest the football couplet could go first, then ballet shoes and tap shoes, as these don't read as well as the other examples, in my opinion. Great ending - I can hear young children loving that! In the flippers example, to me, it scans better as:

Don't wear your flippers when you're out for a run
Its really quite dangerous and should never been done

OR, possibly

Don't wear your flippers when out for a run
Its really quite dangerous and never been done

:)
Thankyou

I agree as to which I should lose first but kept it long because I thought for a picture book it needs a few pages. And thanks for the flipper verse example it sounds much better when read out loud :grin
