You stole the question from my pondering head. 
Not really. 
A fascinating question. I love that metaphor. So simple and so powerful. 
Think about it. After all the damage our industrial revolution has spawned, nature already is showing signs of cleaning up and growing back. We will most likely kill ourselves long before we irreparably hurt the earth. 
 
But that's going a little farther than the poem.
