The Grand Final
By st4945
17 December 2007
My great sporting love is rugby league and one of the best matches I have seen was the 2005 Grand Final between Bradford Bulls and Leeds Rhinos. For the uninitiated the Grand Final is the culmination of the Super League season and no expense is spared in the pre match entertainment. For this match Madness entertained the crowd and Leslie Garrett was engaged for the traditional singing of Jerusalem and the National Anthem. Another piece of necessary information is that the then Braford Bulls wing Leslie Vainakolo is a real giant and nicknamed the "Volcano". I hope you enjoy the following which was written on the journey home.

THE GRAND FINAL

Flames flared and fireworks cracked
as Super League’s grand final was finally back,
at Old Trafford’s theatre of dreams.

Or was it the House of Fun?
For that’s what it seemed after Madness had done
their stuff before Garrett’s Jerusalem.
Preliminaries over. It’s time to take our thrones
As the Bulls and Rhinos prepare to lock horns

From whistle blow to siren sound,
tension enveloped the famous ground,
as thousands witnessed a battle royal,
where pulses raced and red blood boiled.

For eighty minutes they snorted and charged.
These brave gladiators, small and large.
From end to end, enthralling the crowd,
who heartily cheered long and loud.

The game was decided when the volcano erupted.
In a moment of drama, Vainakolo disrupted
his opponents efforts to defend their line
and saw, to history, their hopes were consigned.

So the contest was over, the war was won.
The siren sounded, the bell was rung.
The sparkling trophy was the reward,
As the rampaging Bulls put the Rhinos to the sword.

I could see that this was your passion and it came over very well. The atomosphere built up very well. The only small criticism is that you should have kept the first verse and second verse with four lines, and the same rhythm going as in the rest of your poem. Otherwise, a brave attempt.
Good Stuff
