After months of negotiations and rising tensions between the Flemish and Walloon communities, agreement has been reached over who is to be Belgium's next prime minister. Both sides agree that Tony Blair would be a good compromise as he is neither Flemish nor Walloon.
The Flemish want to convince him with a box of chocolates, but the Walloons think waffles are a better choice. Negotiations on this subject are still being held.

........ on form to date, do you think Himself could be @ssssd taking a position so close to these shores? I rather think he'd much prefer his next "freebie" to be a bit further away, you KNOW how the Missus prefers longer journeys ..... |

Hi Bagheera. Well, he could practice there before he hops over to the Middle East. :-P |

| Surely the Dutch have more sense than that. But if that's the way they want to go - good luck to them. |

Thanks Jean. Dutch perhaps (although our politicians aren't exactly the best either), but Belgians... :P OK, that's a cultural thing: Dutch just like to make fun of Belgians and vice versa |

| I doubt the average Belgian would give a toss... or even notice.... which would suit Cherie's accountants. (Apparently, only one in five Belgians knows why their national day is 21 July). Tony would require something far more statesmanlike.... roving ambassador to Mustique. with a penthouse thrown in, and a prvate confessional. Nice idea, Fledermaus. Cheers. |

Hi Fled. Is not Belgium mainly Protestant? In view of recent events would his appointment not go down like a lead Walloon. Enjoyed this. Roger |

Thanks Coosh and Woody, Coosh: Well, many people same to make a bit of a fuss about language, and I'm quite sure Blair doesn't speak either of their languages fluently. I haven't got a clue about 21 july either... Independence day? Silly Dutch government didn't seem to get it either: They sent troops to join the parade celebrating Belgium's 175th birthday. While we only recognized their independence 9 years later. Besides, why would they want to join the celebrations? It's like the British army going to Dublin to commemorate the Easter Rising... Woody: Belgium is mainly Catholic (one of the reasons why they declared independence), so he would fit in well. Fair chance indeed though that the both the Flemish and the Walloons 'd complain he's not one of them though. |
Freebies... Written by woody44 (760 comments posted) 30th December 2007 |
I apologise for my lamentable knowledge of Belgium`s religious persuasion. I now have an image of Cheerie getting grossly overweight on tons of free Belgium chocolate..... Roger |

Too bad for poor Tony and Cherry. They've already decided. I think Verhofstad is Flemish (at least his name is)... |
