Now and Then

There is a feature of The Future
Which sets it quite apart.
It's a question of beginnings,
Where does The Future start?

Is it out there somewhere?
Or just a principle of science?
Can we seek to understand it
With any definite reliance?

Take Algebra for instance
That ultimate confuser.
I was assured I'd love it
When I'd mastered how to use her.

So for years I've been a-quiver,
Full of fervent expectation
Of being rushed up to at bus stops
To explain some tough equation.

Or my Aunt who hoards her rubbish
Against the coming time
When to dump her Christmas cake tin
Will become a heinous crime.

Tomorrow and tomorrow
What change is taking place?
Confusion rules. We are unsure
Which way we ought to face.

Is the Past an older Future?
Is the Present really Now?
Is Time a Godly con trick?
When will He take his bow?

The reason for a Future?
It helps to keep us sane,
For if Now is all we're getting
We could never stand the pain.

Wouldn't we? We would probably just sit and do nothing... Funny how you first mention insecurities about the future and then state it's a good thing really.
Nice flow. It has a pleasant rhythm and the rhyme is very good.
I don't know

that I agree with Fledermaus. I don't know much about poetry but I'd say the rhythm begins and ends smoothly but is quite turbulent in the middle upsetting the flow.

The jewel of the poem for me is the final verse. I might just pop out and spray-paint it on a wall.

Well done for that hutmaster.

The unpredictable must, by its nature, be insecure but having any future makes that future, whatever it may hold, a good thing, or at least something which the optimist within me sees as a good thing. Glad you enjoyed the rhythm and rhyme, Fled.

Hi zmbbw. A 'turbulent middle' - sounds like a bellydancer with wind. As for spray painting walls, I thought that had gone out of fashion. Thanks for the read and the comments, z.
