The Teddy who couldn’t sleep
By jillrabbit

I wrote this ages ago. Originally I thought about trying to produce a book with illustrations. Never done anything about it though.

Oh, Scruffy Bear was a beautiful bear,
His fur was all wiry and brown.
He was given to Matty, when Matty was born
Bought from Joplings, a shop in the town.

As Matty grew older  and started to walk
He took Scruffy all over the place
They played in the garden, with pots and stones
And got mud on Scruffy Bear’s face.

When bedtime came round every night about seven
Matty and Scruff drank milk from a cup
After sitting together, reading books by the fire,
Very soon it was time to go up.

The minute that Matty lay down on the pillow
His eyes closed; his slumber was deep
But Scruffy who lay in the cot by his side
Could not close his eyes and just sleep

Night after night as the bright moon shone down
Scruffy Bear was awake and aware
While Matty slept quietly, snuggled in bed
His friend was a  tired little bear.

Scruff didn’t  know why he couldn’t sleep
It made him quite sad every night
To sit in the cot and stare at the moon
Till the birds sang and it became light

One morning he watched as Matty got dressed
He suddenly came up with a plan
“If  I get a pair of pyjamas,” he thought,
“I can sleep, I’m sure that I can !”

The problem of how he could get some pyjamas
Was hard to do something about.
Scruff needed some help from his other toy friends
After dark, he could give them a shout.

After thinking awhile, with his friends Tig and Hodge
They came up with an answer at last
The material bag Matty’s mum kept downstairs
But, they had the grey cat to get past.

They decided to go on the following night
Creeping quietly, soft as a mouse.
The grey cat was sleeping, his head in his paws
As, on tiptoes, they crept  through the house.

When they opened the cupboard and got out the bag
Scruff chose some material to wear
He lay on the floor on top of the cloth
While Tig cut a shape round him there

Hodge took a spine from his back for a needle
Tig found some thread on the ledge
Scruff put  the pieces together at last
And sewed them all tight edge to edge

It took them some time to finish the task
And lots of the stripes didn’t match
But just as the clock in the hall struck three
They sewed on the last little patch

Hodge and Tig  shuffled off to the cupboard nearby
Waving tiredly, and rubbing their eyes
‘We’ll see you tomorrow, Scruffy Bear.’ they both yawned,
‘If I sleep well!’ was his hopeful reply.

Scruff  climbed quickly up  to Matty’s warm cot
Snuggling quietly down by his side
He waited for something to happen and slowly
His eyes got quite drowsy and tired

As morning approached and the sun lit the sky
In the bed was a wonderful sight
The pyjamas had worked for the tired little bear
Both Matty and he, sleeping tight.

When Matty awoke , he gasped with surprise
To find his bear dressed in new clothes
But he thought that his Mummy had changed them last night
And he left Scruffy  Bear  just to doze.

Every night about seven, Matty and Scruff
Read their books , drink their milk and then creep
Up the stairs to their bed, before snuggling down
In two minutes, they're both sound asleep.

(With Scruffy in his pyjamas, of course !)

What a lovely poem, I enjoyed it and I'm sure children would.
I like your idea of an illustrated book and I'm sure there's scope for more stories about Scruffy.
Good one

Jill, you have a lovely story here and good rhyme and rhythm in your poem, which children love. I may be wrong, though, but when I have found that smaller children (who you have written for), start getting restless after about 4 or 5 verses at the most. Their concentration goes. I would keep the story but cut it down to the main facts. For example, with the early verses you could start: Matt's little bear called Scruffy, just couldn't sleep at night. He saw the moon up in the sky, which gave his room the light. This is only done quickly, but you get to the point that he lay awake. You might say that Matt's Mum made him some pyjamas the same colour as Matt's own etc. There again, you may think I am wrong. Try it on small children and see.
