Not Like Us
By maipenrai
24 December 2007
They are not like us,
their values are different
they even think different
the poor.

I'ts not that I have anything against them
more like nothing in common with them,
they look so untidy, unwashed, do they bathe?
cheap bargain basement clothes,
their children fat and bloated on garbage food.

A wise man once said
that the poor will always be with us,
but can't they be more discreet and
just hide away at Christmas Time,
they upset my children.

It's not that I am thoughtless,
each year at this time
if I have some spare change
I put it in the Charity Box and
Oxfam get my twenty quid
every year, without fail.

But I am busy, busy, busy
in the Real World,
My World,
It;s not that I don't care
but can't someone  just take the poor away
at Christmas Time.

Well, I do hope you are never down on your luck and join the group you would have swept away!

Didn't Scrooge have something to say about that attitude?

Tongue in cheek, as usual, Bernie, and wonderfully so. This is not so far from the truth as one might imagine.
'Can't they be more discreet'
'It's not that I'm thoughltess'
Lovely touches throughout in this damnation of those whose self-worth and hypocrisy seem even more marked at this time of year.
A very good read.

A really clever bit of work and so horribly plausible. You have captured that slow subtle process of de-humanizing a certain group while at the same time distancing yourself from the process. From there it's but a short step to concentrating them conveniently into camps.
A very powerful and thought provoking piece

A great read. I thoroughly enjoyed it.......There is much of this sentiment around today and you highlighted it brilliantly.
All the best

Sad, that so many people think this way.
Well done for pointing out the hypocrisy of modern life!
