Wrote this for my local toy shop but chickened out of giving it to them.

On the A13,
In Westcliff On Sea

Past the second hand shop and the park with the trees,
On the left if your walking In an easterly direction,

Is a shop that sells toys An amazing selection

It has a big window and some toys outside it

Like a slide and a swing and a big pile of sand pits

It's a toy shop and post office All mixed together
And when you walk in It goes on forever

It's how a shop should be, the people are kind
They offer there help when there's stuff you can't find

As I walk through My tummy goes jumpy
A cave full of treasure All shouting out buy me

I run to the back Where the big stuff is hiding

Scooters and tricycles, Stuff made for climbing

I head to the left and from floor up to ceiling
There's hundreds of dolls, Some talking some breathing

There's one that does wee wees, that ones my favourite

My mum thinks its silly and won't let me buy it
I want to have every toy in that shop
And if money no object
I would buy the lot

Once I have checked out The Barbies and games
My mum starts to rush me It's always the same
I start to panic what shall I get
I want to stay looking I'm getting upset

My mum says "lets leave it" But I need to buy
She tugs on my arm, So I start to cry
It always works well When I pull on her heart strings
She feels all guilty And then gets me 2 things

We head to the counter, I'm skippy and pleased
Cos I've got a ball and a baby that wees
The people that work there, I know what they're thinking

They liked my performance that's why they're winking

So when I'm behaving, and making no noise
Please will you take me to Argosy toys

Sounds like a child's heaven. They're lucky today. I was born during the war years. You only had what your parents could make for you plus one book which they had to order. However, I did have a tricycle which had to be sent on the train from Bridport to Birmingham. My granny managed to find a second hand one. I liked you poem with all the fun it contained. I liked the line: "They liked my performance - that's why they're winking." ha ha. Really funny! Is it true?

Liked how you got inside the child's head. Fun piece.

I spent a very drunk weekend in Westcliff On Sea many years ago. I stayed with a friend above an estate agents on the main street. You mention a park. Does it have a house in the middle of it - and maybe some geese? - I might be imagining the geese actually.

Happy days! (c 1990)

I'm ok at getting in childrens heads but better at getting under peoples skin!

My life is generally based around being drunk in Westcliff on sea or Leigh-on-sea if we were talking post codes.Yes Chalkwell Park with a large house and some peacocks behind bars. Nice resturant in centre of park where my brother is the chef.x

Liked this too, especially the way it skipped along, and the child's voice was very good.

Hi... I am a bit late reading your piece but I had to leave a few words.
You have incorporated a lot of light humour into this, which isn't easy to do, and I enjoyed it.
A good write.
