Dakota

A new year, sometimes we look back to see forward.

Along a weedy path I walked

on the Dakota prairie,

the sky overcast with yesterday’s rain.

Just enough sunlight to cast a shadow;

just enough sunshine to remember

the hot sand and surf of distant shores.

I ambled along, through a line of trees

planted there by prairie winds,

now pacing their slow march to glory.

At path’s end, a barn leaning

with the quiet grace of antiquity,

as old and as ageless as her country.

And there, five wooden crosses

mark the sum total of spent lives,

nameless but to a walking traveler.

Just enough humanity to cast a shadow;

to know their Dakota and understand

why they came.

Coming from North Dakota myself, I could hardly resist reading this poem.

I'm not quite sure I understand all the allusions, but I liked it all the same. I know about the wooden crosses on the roadsides.

I've only been to South Dakota once, but for some reason it is one of my favorite states. I hale from the Rocky Mt states (Wyoming, Montana, Colorado, Utah).

I hope the allusions aren't too abstract -- I just wanted to present a walking traveler who often gets wrapped up in day dream while walking -- thinks of distant shores he has seen.

the leaning barn I wanted to use a little personification, give her more of a life than just weathered wood.

There should be a space between stanza in the middle part, I don't know what happened but I'll go fix that.

Thanks for reading and commenting.
