IN LINE ASTERN

In line astern, each shiny hull
A striped and blackened alloy,
Slugs, determined, purposeful,
Glide past in silent convoy.

With the periscopic eyes of snails
They lurk, a stealthy, oily fleet,
To scourge an enemy who sails
The vast horizons beneath our feet.

A Fleet of Snails bearing the royal stan
Written by Josie (2785 comments posted) 9th January 2008
Wonderful description. Never thought of them as a fleet before, but you have described them well. I'll be thinking more of them as the year comes on. I now have an army of moorhens who I believe like snails as a delicacy. I really enjoyed your description Pete.
