Napoleon on St. Helena
By njruk
09 January 2008
Poem based on Napoleon's unjust imprisonment on St. Helena from 1815 - 1821.

And thus it has come to this
Enchained in the dark room at Longwood,
Forced to watch your own star fade and die
Under the auspices of an ungrateful world.

O what prodigious destiny you commanded!
Kings and armies lived or died unto your word
But here it ends,
Prisoner on this hateful British rock.

So many have betrayed you.
So many have deserted you.
You, who made them what they are
You, to whom they owe all they have.

Ils t'ont Ragusé.

And now you prowl the dark room at Longwood,
Brooding over the course of your existence.
Your far away memories, of those you loved,
Those you fought with, battles won and lost.

They may imprison the man
Enslave the body
But the spirit burns bright,
Far beyond the dark room at Longwood.

How the mighty can fall

You have brought it home very powerfully how Napoleon was brought down to finish his life in a hovel, being fed on food that was so bad that even some of his servants were loathe to touch it, so it is said. I've just read that he said: "To injustice and violence they now add insult and protracted torment. If I were so hateful to them, why did they not get rid of me? A few musket balls in my heart or my head would have done the business, and there would at least have been some energy in the crime." What a way for a man who had been so great to end this life! Well written.
