WHALES - a fun "rap" poem for children
By Josie
16 January 2008

I'm still trying my experiment - ie writing a poem on the subject of whales for different age groups.  Whilst I think the poem below is for older children, I think that younger children (6 - 8 yrs) will enjoy the special "rap" rhythm in this particular poem, which will make a good performance poem.  No more poems on the subject of whales again, you'll be pleased to know.

There's a sound recording of me reading this poem:  http://www.whiteheadm.co.uk/html/whales.html#whales

Now, Mr  Whale lives his lifetime in the deep blue sea.
He’s a mammal and he breathes just like you and me.

Some whales are enormous – much bigger than us
,And the blue whale’s bigger than a double decker bus.

He travels round the oceans, and  thinks he is a king .
He dives and he leaps, and did you ever hear him sing?

He’s a master of performance – the ruler of the deep.
He has lots of little catnaps, but he never really sleeps..

Mankind’s his only killer – other enemies there's none.
He loves spyhopping.  lobtailing and  having lots of fun.

To him I'm just a midget and I don't swim in the sea -
But I wrote a poem for him.  Did he write a poem for me?

Hmm, speaking of whales, there's this video on the internet somewhere (i saw this on TV), and it's called "Save the Pandas", but it's actually about Orcas attacking seals, and at the end it says "Still wanna save the whales?". Yeah, I could say it has a rap rhythm to it. I wonder if that whale ever wrote that poem for you ;).

Thanks Turbowolffe. I'm always pleased to know that young people like reading my poems, for I mainly write for them. I know children like rap rhythms because I've seen some of them putting my "The Winter Picnic" to rap, and was told how they enjoy this, clicking their fingers and swaying in time to the rhythm. I'll do more this way. My main aim with these three poems was to show that the same subject can be tackled by a writer in completely different ways for different age-groups.

The best of your whale poems I have seen so far. Maybe they do create poems?

Fledermaus: Children are all into "rap" these days and here in the north of England there are many people from other countries who are taking "rap" into schools. At Ilkley Literature Festival, one of the events for children was writing poetry to rap. Children love rhythm. When I read this to my little 9 yr old friend, she immediately started clicking her fingers and swaying rhythmically and said the poem was "Cool" - so I guess that was OK. ha ha
A class once put my poem about The Winter picnic to rap to show me how it was done, and it was such fun. I'd never thought of this - but children are there to teach us I tthink. I always listen to what they say because they tell you the truth, not trying to flatter you in any way. They are straight out with the truth and their body language portrays it too.

Now this is one I'd love to hear you perform, Josie. Get a beat box and get rapping. Don't forget to wear your jeans halfway down your backside and adopt a cocky pose. Can't wait to see it on the web site!

Enjoyed.

I think you'd describe me as a "groovey granny" - or does that give the game away, being a 1960 expression Phil? I just know that the children love performing, and rap poetry is what they love - so have to give the customers what they want. ha ha.

Definition of Groovey? "Highly stimulating or attractive" - yes man!!! Quite true!
