Defiance
By DressedInPoetry
26 January 2008
To my parents.
We had to pick a word and write a poem about it in a few minutes.

Defiance.

Definition: A reliance on yourself,

Contrary to what others think you should do.

Example: My entire life.

I defy your standards

By making my own.

Ignoring your moderate views,

I choose a liberal path for myself.

I defy your morals

By piercing my body

And dyeing my hair.

Because the way I look

Is not the way you want me to look,

You yell and scream.

But I defy you then too

By not listening

And by continuing to live my life

Exactly

How I want to.

Defiance.

A reliance

On myself.

An interesting poem, although I completely disagree with it. If you set out to make yourself into someone's opposite, aren't you still being controlled by them rather than yourself?

It's not so much that I'm making myself into their opposite as that I just do what I want. It just so happens that what I want is the exact opposite of what they want for me.
