Milan
By maipenrai

based on a piece I read in the Independent.

I saw his picture in the paper,
Milan,
an ordinary looking guy
an ordinary looking soldier
in his camo uniform
medals on display,
maybe a good guy to have a beer with,
just one of the guys was Milan.

Milan was a Para-Military
Milan is a killer
of women and children
in their thousands,
was Milan born a monster?.

Odd mix of tenses here, Bernie. Made it a bit of a jumpy read. Perhaps a little over simple but effective in juxtaposing the two ideas.

I'm not always convinced your thinking aloud style of writing is best suited to poetry. Sometimes, ideas such as these may be better explored through prose or refined to verse. Inbetween for me.

However - you always raise important ideas that are well worth considering.

I wrote a piece for the non fiction side which was about "Beauty is in the Eye of the Beholder." We teach children from stories that all evil men are horrible looking monsters and that good people are beautiful - but we are teaching them the wrong thing. Beasts and demons can hide themselves inside beautiful skins. Your poem says it wonderfully Bernie.

Nobody is born a monster, Bernie, it is their life that makes them so.

Indeed, what Audrie said. No-one is born a monster, but circumstances can turn them into it. I guess from the guys name he's a Yugoslav. All sides there committed terrible crimes and I think a lot of people became crazy in that war.
