If you want to impress people at parties, you can tell them you're a member of The Society of Authors. Founded in 1884, the Society supports and protects the interests of writers. They're the ones to turn to if you want advice on professional issues, or if you'd like opportunities to meet agents or publishers. £80 a year, or just £56 if you're under 35.
