Rough and Ready
By audrie
30 January 2008
This, like a lot of my verses, started out as a song when I was rather smitten with a folk singer, who could have been classed R & R.

Oh, they say you're rough and ready,
That your hand is never steady
And the girls you have around aren't worth a dime.
But, no matter what they say,
I don't believe you are that way
And I won't rest until you're mine, all mine.

Oh, you sing a song of sadness
But you make me feel the gladness,
Of the joy of smiling softly through my tears.
I don't care if you're a rough one,
Smoothing you will be such great fun,
And I know that I will love you all my years.

Some people only see the cover,
Never search to find the other
Who is hidden deep inside those outside walls.
But I know that I will find you,
From your chains I will unbind you,
For I know, it is to me, your sad heart calls.

Oh, I'm coming now to get you,
Nothing more will ever fret you
And happiness will be ours without an end.
So, my rough and ready darling
Everyone will think you're charming
But, I hope, that only me you will attend.

Oh, don't say that now I've smoothed you
I'm about to go and lose you.
I really don't think I could stand the pain.
So you'd better start to think twice,
Cheating me would not be too nice,
For I'd pretty soon start to rough you up again!

okay for a song but not too okay for a poem as my definition of a poem encompases more that rhyme it goes futher to metaphor, assonance, allusion and the likes of them. The poem is a compressed way of passing across a message not just waht you feel because people get to read these things so it pays to make their time worth the while

Well, that's because it was a song and not a poem!

I take on board what you say, WC, but how many writings on this site are really poetry???

We seem to have a mixture of poetry, free verse, three- liners, and slabs of prose chopped up into lines, to say nothing of the limericks! So, you pays your money and you makes your choice!

Give me a country and western tune and you have a hit for Dolly Parton! Wry and knowing and beautifully crafted.
