Having just watched a BBC 4 filmed biography, I thought I would post my own, poor effort at summarising of one of the world's greatest recorded singers. This was written some years ago; but Ella's voice touches parts of us that we probably never knew we had.
ELLA
Her voice I knew
From weeks of records
Played as a backdrop
To years of life.
Ella in Concert, 1960:
The audience,
Awash with awe,
Is rapt in thrall.
Each intonation,
Subliminally etched,
Strikes chords
That quiver in the spine.
The songs, the sound,
The voice,
Encapsulate the culture
Of a passing generation.
I believed
I knew emotion,
But her voice,
Her phrasing, timing,
And her pitch,
Which had no peer,
Tore at the hearts
In ten thousand seats.
The audience
Became came a congregation
As she wracked ten thousand souls
And wrenched unnumbered tears.
Exhilaration
Begat exhaustion
As we each receive
This gift of privilege:
To have shared her dream;
An evanescent yet enduring
Distillation: the essence
Of the incomparable – Ella.

For the perfectionists, have somehow transposed this without a 'd' on "receive". PTV | Written by audrie (454 comments posted) 2nd February 2008 | | I'm certainly with you on Ella, Pete. Liquid gold I used to call her voice. Don't know anyone who can match her. | Written by Phil (6951 comments posted) 2nd February 2008 | Admiration shines through in this. As a tribute then, a success. I thought the specific worked better than the general - but we all react differently to the same words. For others it may be the other way around. Phil |
