Morning Lament
By patterjack
05 February 2008
Just a doodle  that  surprisingly turned  itself  into  a  sonnet.

Morning  Lament

In a moment of pique the good Doctor Donne
set himself firmly to admonish the sun
by chiding at first its voyeur's intrusion;
but could it have been a sign of confusion
when his  inverted logic took a different turn
and welcomed it back with much less concern?

But leave him to play with his own rags of  time:
his hours, months and day
s in transmogrified rhyme,
because whether it be daylight, whether it be dark,
spending time in the bedroom, renewing the spark
of a love's lost burning and a life soon sped
neither thought is welcome in an aging head.

So it's quite a relief when it enters the room
to dispel for the nonce an old man's gloom.

Yes, Brian, I think we all need the healing warmth of the sun, especially after we have turned the half-way point!

Who am I kidding, it must be at least three-quarters!!

An admirable sonnet, I'm sure old Donne would approve.

This made me revisit JD. I've avoided his poetry for twenty-odd years. I must have had a rotton teacher because he's nowhere near as bad as I remember. (Unlike Wordsworth - who is much worse.)

Suffering poetic uncertainty here, Brian. I think this was supposed to be light hearted - but the end is more serious than it began. Can't work out if you're mocking yourself or just relieved to have the morning arrive and cast away night-time mental wanderings.

Had quite a bouncy rhythm - unlike you. Possibly the result of couplets?

Liked it.

Scary mornings

Yes it's always nice to wake up and find you've been spared for at least another day.
This is the sort of poem I feel at home with, easy to read and with a content that makes you do a bit of work.
Bit of a two edged sword though- the morning. I always remember a song that had a line
"You should always do something every day that scares you" Well for me that means getting out of bed most mornings. Is that why you called it a lament?
