Who Am I?
By NathanRoberts
18 February 2008
A song lyric.

Who am I?

I don’t even know myself

I’ve realised

God only comes

To those who look into themselves

Who am I?

Will looks and a name suffice?

If permanence is a lie

There’s nothing to force

No will can reveal the divine

And in your defence

The half human I have met

Is twice as good as the rest of them

It’s your second offence

But no sentence is as long

As you have spent on your own

Who am I?

An ancient koan devised

To free the mind’s eye

There’s nothing to force

No will can reveal the divine

I saw one possible spelling error, there might be others. Should "defence" be defense?

I am not going to say anything about style, that is your own, but about idea. I had a problem following with the repeat of the word "will", though I liked the reason behind the use. My problem is probably just too literal. It is that you seem to praise introspection, which is something I see as a highly will-powered act, yet the last line "no will can reveal the divine" seems to contradict this.

I might be wrong.

Thanks Doug,

In reply, 'defence' is the correct english spelling I think (I just checked online :)).

REF: Will/Introspection. I guess introspection is will powered, in that it requires an act of will to 'do' anything....but my implication was that the divine Truth or True Self 'appears' through grace...it cannot be forced to appear simply by 'willing' 'it' to do so..it is only when one lets go that the divine aspect shines through. It is a sort of paradox and rather zen (the 'koan' bit was a clue) ....a spiritual 'practice' may be required to know your True Self and yet your True Self is already 100% everpresent. Zen describes it all so much more clearly with a simple 'Mu' ;)
